It's Black Leaders Awareness Day! Today is a fantastic opportunity to uplift Black leaders in business across global organizations. Black employees still face systemic barriers to progression and allies must do more to ensure that they can reach the top of their careers. Rather than taking the foot off the pedal, businesses need to be driving forward with ambitious actions for change that create equity and propel Black leaders forward. Not sure where to start? Black History Month offers an opportunity to recognize and celebrate Black leaders who are creating tremendous impact in the world through their personal and professional contributions. To show appreciation to several remarkable leaders whom I follow and learn from who work in Human Resources, Leadership, and Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging I'm sharing them with you today. 🌟 Did you know leadership can be a powerful tool in dismantling racism? 🌟 This Black History Month, let's shine a light on the imperative role leaders play in advocating for equity and justice within their industries. Leaders, it's time to turn introspection into action. Start by diagnosing your organization's internal environment. Utilize analytics to ensure your diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ) strategies are rooted in evidence. Align these strategies with your business objectives, making equity and justice a core part of your organization's DNA. But let's not stop there. Engage with your community and stand up for social justice values. Whether it's through education, policy initiatives, or bold leadership actions, every step taken is a step toward a more equitable future. 👉 Here's a tip: Identify and support race equity champions within your organization. Encourage these leaders to use their voices to foster a culture of inclusivity and fairness. 🚀 Action Step: Conduct a DEI focus group this month. Listen, learn, and strategize on how to make your workplace more inclusive. Let's use our platforms to advocate for change, not just this month, but every day. Here are three reflection questions to guide us in nurturing a culture that embraces diversity at every level: 💡 How am I actively listening to diverse voices within my team? Consider whether you're creating spaces for all voices to be heard, especially those that might historically be marginalized. An INVITATION in every meeting is important. 💡 In what ways am I empowering individuals from different backgrounds to share their stories and insights? Reflect on the platforms and opportunities you're providing for diverse perspectives to shine. Creating SPACE for connection is critical. 💡 How am I acknowledging and integrating the significance of Black History Month into our team's culture? This month offers a powerful opportunity to celebrate the achievements and contributions of Black individuals. Consider how you're incorporating this into your team's learning and development initiatives. Don't let FEAR of not doing it right stop you. Act and learn. As leaders, our ACTIONS and reflections SET the TONE for an inclusive culture. Let's embrace this role with COMMITMENT, empathy, and a genuine desire to understand and celebrate the rich tapestry of humanity within our teams. As we acknowledge Black Awareness Month, it's important to reflect on the state of leadership diversity in today’s workplaces. A 2020 report reveals 4.7% of leadership roles are held by BAME individuals in the UK, with Black individuals holding just 1.5% of these roles. This gap in representation highlights the slow pace of change and the untapped potential of diverse leadership. While some strides are being made, there’s still much more to be done to ensure leadership reflects the diversity of the workforce and society. As we round out Black History Month this week, I've been busy prepping with organizations for my last couple of appearances--every T crossed, every I dotted so that these experiences deliver on the desired results and everyone comes away feeling inspired and having learned something new. This made me think a bit, and it spurred a thought: As Black leaders, we get called on tremendously during this time in February, and if you are a Black woman leader, you are likely highly engaged in this type of programming March whether you are paid to do it as I am or you're doing so as an extended part of your role as a corporate executive. ✅ What are you doing between these events to ensure that you're a future maker for leaders like you and others? ✅ What is your impact on tomorrow? ✅ What will be your contribution and legacy beyond February and March...beyond your days on this earth? Titles don’t define leadership — actions do!   As we celebrate Black History Month in the UK, it’s important to ask yourself: Am I making intentional decisions? 🤔   Pioneers such as Rosa Parks and Paul Stephenson (refer to comments for links to their bios) were intentional and strategic in their efforts to promote the rights of the marginalized. 🚌   You can also make a difference because your everyday actions are important. You could:   💡 Stand up for a colleague who’s being ignored.  💼 As leaders, address unfair compensation practices.   You will leave a legacy.
