Hemp as A Sustainable Carbon Negative Plant: A Review of Its Properties, Applications, Challenges and Future Directions Australian researchers provide a comprehensive review of literature that evaluates hemp’s capacity as a Carbon Negative source for multiple products. The paper overviews the plant's properties, applications, challenges, and future directions in the context of its role as a sustainable carbon-negative plant. ”Hemp’s carbon negativity can be attributed to its ability to sequester carbon during its rapid growth phase and its potential for long-term carbon storage.” Hemp carbon sequestration is further enhanced when varieties produce extensive and fibrous root systems. Hemp roots can reach depths of up to 3 meters in the soil. New West Genetics has been evaluating and selecting for greater mass in the root systems in their varieties and AMPLIFY hybrids- with the end goal to increase root carbon sequestration.
