Our aging population is facing an isolation crisis, with approximately one-quarter of Americans aged 65 and older considered socially isolated. Often coupled with increased physical health concerns and reliance on caregivers, this can have an immense impact on mental well-being. Read more from Katherine Wooten, Lucet expert on geriatric care, on why Medicare and Medicare Advantage plans serving this population must integrate more comprehensive mental health services to address these concerns: https://hubs.la/Q02KBc5G0 #BehavioralHealth #MentalHealth #Medicare #Aging

World Mental Health Day 2024: A Time for Reflection and Action Today, on October 10th, we celebrate #WorldMentalHealth Day, a vital reminder that mental well-being is a universal right. This year’s theme, "Mental Health for All: Greater Access, Greater Care", calls attention to the ongoing need for improved access to mental health services. As we reflect on the progress made, particularly through telehealth, we also face critical challenges. The rise of telehealth during the pandemic was a game-changer, increasing access to mental health services by breaking down geographic and stigma-related barriers. However, with telehealth waivers set to expire in just 82 days, millions may soon lose access to the services they’ve come to rely on for #mentalhealth and substance use treatment. The need for permanent telehealth legislation has never been more urgent. Without it, patients could face care gaps, especially in underserved areas. Policymakers, healthcare providers, and advocates must come together to ensure that the progress we’ve made in mental health care isn't lost. Telehealth has shown us what’s possible. Now, we must ensure those possibilities continue for all who need them. In the realm of mental health care, the shortage of providers presents a formidable challenge. With demand skyrocketing, particularly in underserved areas, several barriers hinder access to quality care. Geographical limitations often force individuals to travel long distances for mental health services, exacerbating disparities. Even in areas with providers, long wait times for appointments are common, deterring many from seeking help. Limited treatment options further compound the issue, with some individuals receiving inadequate or standardized care due to the scarcity of providers. Stigma and cultural barriers also play a role, preventing some from seeking help and perpetuating misconceptions about mental illness. Provider burnout and turnover further strain the system, disrupting continuity of care and exacerbating the shortage. Despite these challenges, collaborative efforts between policymakers, healthcare organizations, and communities offer hope. Investments in telehealth, increased funding for workforce development, and initiatives to reduce stigma and enhance cultural competency can expand access to care. Together, let's dismantle barriers and ensure that everyone, regardless of location or circumstance, can access the mental health support they need. #MentalHealth #AccessToCare #BreakBarriers 🌟

Support for care workers is important. The unique challenges that come from helping someone with a mental or substance use disorder can be taxing, so care workers should take steps to prioritize their own health, too. #CareWeek These resources can help: samhsa.gov/find-support

Serial HSJ 50 most influential BAME leader in health (2021, 2022, 2023, 2024), Telegraph 100 Female Entrepreneur list. Awarded MBE in the Kings New Year Honours 2024 for #SocialPrescribing. #PublicHealth Academic
Agree with most points in the Guardian article! I don't know if this bit is ideologically? Where should the 40% with mental health problems be treated? What is "general" about the practice, & "primary" about the care? If GP "can't" treat or "unwilling" to deploy #socialprescribing then NHS funding💰 for social prescribing service should be deployed elsewhere to avoid failure demand. Patients unmet need must be relegated to the annals of history. Voluntary sector and community pharmacy are keen on social prescribing service contracts. https://lnkd.in/dkFx5PHy

“Giving seriously injured workers the best chance at a better life takes holistic support,” says Emma Schedler, LISW, a Paradigm Community Support Specialist Team Manager. “It's just as important for people to recover emotionally as it is physically.” That’s why our HERO Catastrophic® Outcome Plans prioritize integrating behavioral health with expert medical care, including access to our Community Support Specialists (CSS), master’s-level social workers and behavioral health professionals specially trained to match support and resources that meet the individual needs of the injured patient and family caregivers. Our data underscores the effectiveness of CSS engagement, correlating with lower-than-projected medical spend, higher release to return-to-work rates, faster achievement of targeted outcomes, and less utilization of professional mental health services over the course of recovery.
