This is fabulous. Our photographs of children in Crown Street were seen by Amanda Graham who recognised her family members, got in touch, and gave us additional information which we were able to include in a 'Picture Story' newsletter. We were then able to put James King in touch with Amanda, and she subsequently appears in this Thamesfest film, which also happens to feature the images licensed from us. A true example of where social media and networking can result in an enriched history for all. It's also been a pleasure to work and collaborate with Chamion Caballero and the Mixed Museum and hope there are more stories to tell in future.
The Strangers Home – a fantastic new documentary produced by James King - tells the story of migration in London's Royal Docks in the early 20th century. Part of a wider project looking at the longstanding multiracial history of the London Borough of Newham, it draws on personal family memories of many of the settlers’ descendants, as well as academic voices. Our Director, Dr Chamion Caballero, is one of the film’s main academic contributors. In it, she shares aspects of her research into interwar multiracial dockland communities with The Mixed Museum’s co-founder, Dr Peter Aspinall, as well as the pair’s work with TMM collaborative partner Professor Lucy Bland. Our evening on the history of dog photography with the Kennel Club's Heidi Hudson at the library last week. There'll be more talks and events coming up which I'll share on here, X and Instagram. We had a fabulous evening last Thursday when we were joined by Heidi Hudson, curator at the Royal Kennel Club for the first event in our Mary Evans Salon. Heidi gave a fascinating talk on the history of dog photography and how it grew in parallel with the development of dog ownership, pedigree standards and dog shows. The talk was particularly apt as our founder Mary loved dogs and collecting dog imagery, even acquiring the archive of pioneering Victorian dog photographer Thomas Fall in 2001. We had a really lovely group of people, who enjoyed Heidi's lecture, meeting her Portuguese Water Spaniel, Bob, and enjoying the surroundings of our unique building, all with a glass of wine in hand. I really love this new set of images. While the chocolate-box-pretty villages and countryside are lovely, there are also fascinating views of post-war towns like Harlow and Stevenage. Basically, something for everyone with a large helping of nostalgia!
We've had a brief hiatus but our weekly newsletter is back. Our latest Collection of the Week casts the spotlight on a recent upload of over 1000 wonderful images around Britain in the J. Salmon Archive. We feel trust and traceability are increasingly important for anyone wishing to use historical, archive images & think it's worth highlighting the fact we're one of the few image sources where we hold and have access to original material.
