The central approach to the internal jugular vein (IJV) is commonly used for central venous line (CVL) insertion because it may reduce the risk of pleural or carotid arterial puncture. However, multiple studies have found that catheters in the IJV have a higher rate of colonization or infection compared to those in the subclavian vein.
