Last week in Geneva, the United Nations hosted the AI for Good Summit, bringing together industry leaders, inventors, government representatives, academics, and more to develop a framework ensuring that #AI designs adhere to #ethics and #humanRights. “We need to frame these technologies. We need to increase the capacities of governments to frame them, the capacities of communities to use them, the capacities of small and medium-sized enterprises to deploy them, so that the story of AI is not an unequal one and does not just reproduce existing inequalities,” said Gabriela Ramos, Assistant Director-General for the Social and Human Sciences at UNESCO. The question of how to balance #regulation and #innovation remains unresolved. Last year's moratorium from the Future of Life Institute (FLI) likely held more symbolic than practical value, as #generativeAI continues to advance rapidly, making the letter feel as though it was written a decade ago. As a case in point, in the first episode of the TED AI Show, Bilawal Sidhu discusses OpenAI’s #Sora and the growing problem of deepfakes that are indistinguishable from actual news reporting. He questions whether we are asking the right questions regarding policy and data governance, which is likely the most relevant issue for the upcoming European elections. Without the ability to estimate and benchmark AI capability advancements, organizations are left to respond to each change reactively, impeding their ability to build viable mid and long-term strategies. This paper explores the recent growth of forecasting, a political science tool that uses explicit assumptions and quantitative estimation that leads to improved prediction accuracy. Done at the collective level, forecasting can identify and verify talent, enable leaders to build better models of AI advancements and improve inputs into design policy. Successful approaches to forecasting and case studies are examined, revealing a subclass of "superforecasters" who outperform 98% of the population and whose insights will be most reliable. Finally, techniques behind successful forecasting are outlined, including Phillip Tetlock's "Ten Commandments." Let's ponder the moral intricacies of our digital age. As we intertwine our lives with technology, ethical challenges in artificial intelligence are becoming increasingly pressing. I often find myself at the heart of these dilemmas, considering how technologies that I work with might be used for harm. The spectrum of issues is broad, from deepfakes to automated hate speech, all the way to its potential role in human rights violations. It’s a sobering thought that such a promising field also harbors dark possibilities. Take synthetic biology for example – an area where AI could have profound effects. Globally, biologists are taking a stand to ensure their work remains within ethical bounds. Their commitment speaks volumes about the urgency to craft rules that govern our technological tools responsibly. The debate on whether to keep AI developments open or closed is ongoing and fraught with tension. Researchers argue over which approach better serves society, underlining just how deeply entwined these decisions are with our collective well-being. AI is also redefining work as we know it. By analyzing job tasks, companies unlock new value streams and reshape business models. This shift towards automation brings convenience but also begs the question: At what cost does this acceleration come? There's a risk in rushing development without due diligence – users may lose faith if quality wanes or if outcomes disappoint. It’s imperative then that trust remains central as we advance Large Language Models (LLMs). In scientific research too, AI shows promise; consider its role in hunting for novel antibiotics amidst growing bacterial resistance concerns. Although still early days for such applications, they hint at an exciting horizon where AI aids us in critical discoveries. Our understanding of science itself evolves as AI pushes boundaries further; yet this calls for educational reforms to match the pace of innovation. To wrap up, while artificial intelligence holds vast potential across sectors, it simultaneously poses complex ethical questions we must address head-on. Built from vast amounts of data, these powerful yet imperfect mirrors replicate the same biases and errors we aim to overcome. They show us where we've been, not where we could go together. In the 📕 The AI Mirror, Shannon Vallor presents a visionary perspective on AI's potential. She argues that AI should help us reclaim our capacity for moral and intellectual growth, rather than trapping us in reflections of the past. Vallor rejects dystopian predictions and instead advocates for technology that restores our sense of possibility, giving us the confidence and courage to mend our world. Vallor urges us to rethink what AI can be and what we aspire to achieve with it. This book is interesting for anyone interested in the ethical dimensions of AI and the future of technology. Shannon Vallor is the Baillie Gifford Professor in the Ethics of Data and AI at the University of Edinburgh, where she directs the Centre for Technomoral Futures in the Edinburgh Futures Institute. She is a standing member of Stanford's One Hundred Year Study of Artificial Intelligence (AI100) and member of the Oversight Board of the Ada Lovelace Institute. Professor Vallor joined the Futures Institute in 2020 following a career in the United States as a leader in the ethics of emerging technologies, including a post as a visiting AI Ethicist at Google from 2018-2020.
