Our December issue of Engage is now available, pulling together all the headline news from the previous couple of months, including: 🔹 The publication of the competence tables for The UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence and Commitment contextualised for Higher-Risk Buildings (UK-SPEC HRB). These detail how competence and commitment requirements apply to HRB registration and provide a shared framework for a range of engineering disciplines to deliver safe buildings throughout the building life cycle. A very important milestone that supports the recommendations from Dame Judith Hackitt’s Building A Safer Future report following the Grenfell Tower tragedy in 2017. 🔹 The launch of our new 'Guidance Note on supporting neurodivergent applicants for registration' which has been written by an Engineering Council working group composed of practising engineers with lived experience of neurodivergent traits and conditions, and Licensee staff working on Equality, Diversity and Inclusion and related topics. 🔹 Details on the UK Professional Qualifications Act 2022 (PQ Act) which came into force on 1 December 2023. The PQ Act, as announced by the Government’s Department for Business and Trade (DBT), revokes the UK version of the European Union (Recognition of Professional Qualifications) Regulations 2015 (S.I. 2015/2059). As engineering is regarded as a Chartered Profession that is not regulated in law, from 1 December, the Engineering Council and Licensees will be free to maintain pathways for recognition for professionals from the EU/EEA without any additional requirements in law. 🔹 Former Labour and Conservative ministers Lord Knight and Lord Willetts, with support from our colleagues at EngineeringUK, have launched a five-point plan for growing and sustaining engineering and technology apprenticeships for young people. Recognising the critical importance of engineering and technology for the UK and the sector’s growing workforce needs, the new report is the culmination of a comprehensive inquiry that aims to find solutions to reverse the decline in apprenticeship starts that have been seen in the sector over recent years. 🔹 News that EngC registrants were among the recipients of several recent PEI awards including Professor Tom Crick MBE PhD FHEA FBCS CEng CSci FAcSS, one of three recipients of the BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT Lovelace Medal and Daniel Wei Liang Vong BEng (Hons) BSc IEng MIET, Director at BAWA Cane and Professor Wai Yie Leong CEng FIET, Pro-Vice Chancellor at INTI International University, who were among the world’s top 11 engineers and technologists recognised at the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Awards, which were held on 20 October in London. https://lnkd.in/eXkqpHJT

Highlights include:   🔹 The launch of Engineers 2030, a new initiative from the National Engineering Policy Centre (NEPC) and Royal Academy of Engineering looking at how engineering knowledge and skills are changing in the 21st century and what will be required to attract, educate, recruit, and support future engineers and technicians.   🔹 The past couple of months has seen the release of several important reports and surveys from our partners and stakeholders, including: 🔸 New workforce data from EngineeringUK that reveals the declining proportion of women working in engineering and technology roles, a worrying statistic that is supported by the latest registration statistics from the Engineering Council. 🔸 A report from Enginuity that sets out the practical steps that engineering and manufacturing SMEs should adopt to ensure the success of their apprenticeship schemes. 🔸 A report from the Institution of Mechanical Engineers that explores the healthcare sector’s sustainability challenges and the engineering profession’s contribution to the sector's transition to net zero. 🔸 A recent Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) employment survey which highlights the role of achieving chartership in driving forward individuals’ career advancement.   🔹 Ahead of the UK General Election next month, the NEPC has unveiled a new set of policy priorities and challenges for the next government. In addition, the BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, has issued a report that states how the upcoming election will allow the incoming government to enable a clear vision for how computing will transform the UK. 🔹 Our programme of international engagement continues with our recent hosting of a bilateral meeting with the Ordem dos Engenheiros (Order of Engineers), the regulatory and licensing body for the engineering profession in Portugal. Finally, we are always pleased to highlight the various awards being offered in the professional engineering community with applications now open for both the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) 2024 Young Woman Engineer (YWE) of the Year Awards and the Society of Operations Engineers Safety and Resilience in Engineering Awards. https://lnkd.in/eC-N9PDQ

Hi all, Recently, I was selected as an Arkwright Scholar, and am thrilled to let you all know about this. The application process started around December, when I had to describe my engineering interests and talk about an engineering project that I was working towards. I chose my GCSE DT project, though at the time it was unfinished, and I was scared that it was not a good project whatsoever to submit (considering that I was just prototyping at that point) but still decided to apply and give it a shot. Then came the exam round, made easier by the fact that I was studying GCSE DT, in preparing for the exam round, I learnt a lot about engineering and electronics, and the design challenge questions which the exam consisted of were really fun and interesting to tackle, and made me apply all of the new and interesting information I had acquired throughout my preparation. The final round was the interview round, and this was where I really could show my interests in engineering, I had to deliver a short presentation on my project, and by now it was finished, and I was able to show to the interviewers how I iterated through the design process and how I wanted to further improve it in the future. At the end of this rigorous selection process, I am very grateful to everyone who helped me along this process, and am looking forward to furthering my interests in engineering.
