End of season run in. Our longest training period is in season, we cannot assume ticking boxes or maintenance will keep players robust and capable of tolerating game demands. Continue to develop the relevant: - Structural Qualities and Contractile Properties. Test & Assess Outputs (Vitruve, Catapult and Microgate) Consistency of training process across all qualities is just one component of what helps us keep players healthy and available for the biggest games of the year with last seasons Super Series Championship win and this season's Sprint Final. Taking a set number of ground balls in the infield or outfield without context (speed of any base runners, number of outs, left or rhh, speed of hitter, score) any realistic game like scenarios are just fundamental work and not game-like repetitions. The decision making aspect of training environments is key to player development and the most important concept to a player learning limits, adjustability, and display athleticism!! Cold water immersion: A periodisation approach in football. Many players will use the cold to recover from training and matches. While use will vary between player, its important to have a periodised framework in place. CWI can be utilised around the match for starting players and those who play significant number of minutes. However, during the training week in 1-game week scenarios, we should only use CWI when required. Only high load days (e.g. MD-3), it would be beneficial to include a CWI intervention post-session to accelerate the recovery process. On lifting days (e.g. MD-4), CWI should be avoided due to the potential small negative effects on strength training adaptations (PMID: 33217726). There is currently limited evidence around the benefits of cooling on MD-1 to enhance subsequent next day match performance (hence the question mark). Some players may wish to still use CWI on MD-1, as we can't underestimate the power of the placebo effect in sport. This framework is far from complete. But we must do our best based on current research and anecdotal information. Kudos to Robin Thorpe for prompting the thinking with his work in this area.
