Chicago Public Schools will be paying $1,800,000 extra for non-organic period products from a non-woman owned business. But they didn’t have to. Chicago Public Schools is the nation’s 4th largest school district, supporting 341,382 students. 27% of children in Chicago live in poverty, and offering freely accessible period products in school bathrooms will increase attendance amongst menstruating youth. This is why Aunt Flow worked with Citron Hygiene to respond to a bid with our best price. The tabulations were published, and we came in $1.8m less than our next competitor. We were the only woman-owned company bidding. The only organic cotton period product solution. The only high-capacity, rust-free dispenser (holding 5x the amount of period products). It was baffling when we were notified that we were not selected for the award, although the bid specifically stated it would be awarded to the lowest bidder. Instead, we were disqualified due to a “technicality.” We thoughtfully responded to their inadequate rationale on why we were disqualified. We hired a professional to help us navigate the process. We showed up at a board meeting to plead our case. Their reasons continued to change on why we weren’t awarded the contract. Chicago Public Schools legal counsels’ final position on why we weren’t awarded the contract was because the Aunt Flow dispensers were inferior to the requested models and that our pricing was variable. If CPS took the time to review, they would learn that our dispensers are best-in-class and our pricing was variable only after the contract term. We held off on sharing this story publicly; we were hoping this would be resolved in a fair and just way. But after 6 months and an impending award, it’s important that tax-payers and students know. Our ask? We are awarded the contract or, at a minimum, the bid is thrown out and a proper and fair process is followed that allows the best value for the schools. Both products and prices. ❗ UPDATE: We have created a petition, please sign if you feel inclined https://chng.it/vqsdct77dZ

My husband and I had never participated in a Trash Bash and wanting to mentor some young leaders with East End Communities and learn from groups doing this work, we volunteered at the River Lakes, Bays 'N Bayous Trash Bash and helped clean the Kuhlman Gully in Houston, Texas. Some of the items we found: - plastic bags - plastic drinking water bottles - beer bottles - styrofoam cups, plates, bowls - condom wrappers - soda cans - food wrappers - metal shopping carts from grocery stores - spray paint aerosol cans - potato chip bags - plastic food containers - advertising signs - loteria cards - parts of styrofoam portable coolers - dirty diapers - sterno metal cans It broke my heart to see all of this trash, that will wind up in our waterways, but my heart was so happy seeing these volunteers (of all ages) come out and serve the community in this manner (even those who were differently abled came out via Uber, just wow!!) So many organizations are doing similar work in our communities and collaborating to serve together was so exhilarating! We collectively got out of our silos this morning and joined our superpowers to make a positive impact on the environment. Our goal was to join existing efforts so we can replicate these best practices in different neighborhoods in our city. Imagine what we can do synergistically to be part of the solution to reducing health disparities where we live, learn, work, worship and play? What #healthycommunities and #healthypeople we would be? Today, proves that it is possible! One person CAN make a difference and EVERYONE should try! -JFK #TrashBash #CommunityHealthWorker #Volunteering #CommunityOrganizing #environmentalstewardship #advocacy #socialdeterminantsofhealth #publichealth #cleanwatermatters trashbash.org eastendcommunities.org

Politics should not take precedence over period products. This is outrageous. $1.8Mil less?! AND for a SUPERIOR product. How many teachers could this overpayment have paid for? How many extracurricular programs could the school district offered? How many aides could they hired? Buildings could they have improved? Shame on Chicago Public Schools. Look at the bigger picture because this kind of decision making is why people are quick to suggest corruption. When we’re talking about a difference of $1.8Mil, seems like the choice should have been obvious.

Everyone deserves ample access to healthy food, and my agency, Human by Design, is committed to helping organizations, such as The Food Fix Campaign, fight food insecurity. Access to healthy food is surprisingly difficult in the United States, especially for those in need. Our food system is unsustainable and harmful, and it all starts with how our food is produced. Through lobbying and politics, our food producers have been historically incentivized to prioritize junk food, harming our health, economy, and the environment. The Food Fix Campaign is making massive strides in reimagining how proper monetary incentives can influence agricultural practices, nutrition, and health. They’re advocating policy changes to build healthy soil by transitioning to Regenerative Organic Agricultural practices to grow nutritious foods while healing the planet. A “Food is Medicine” policy is being implemented to reverse and prevent chronic diseases. These, and many more initiatives, will ultimately benefit millions. While there are many complex issues to be solved surrounding food, small steps lead to lasting change. I’m excited to partner with The Food Fix Campaign for our farms, health, and planet.
Food Fix x Human by Design: Fixing America’s Broken Food System from Field to Fork 🥕 We're excited to feature a project near and dear to our hearts. Food Fix is a campaign founded by Mark Hyman, MD devoted to fixing America's broken food system. The primary mission is to transform how federal funds are deployed and reimagine how proper monetary incentives can influence agricultural practices, nutrition, and health. Working closely with the Food Fix leadership team, Stephanie D'Aurio, and Human by Design, distilled the brand narrative and built a modular design framework to significantly improve the digital presence, including a comprehensive learning syllabus and educational video library. The new foodfix.org website features a clear, minimalist design that emphasizes illustrations, prompts video engagement, and drives donations. Our team is delighted that more government leaders are being educated on food insecurity and that the donor base continues to grow as a direct result of the newly built website. #foodfix #experiencedesign

This is a sneak peak at our entirely disposable table settings- yes including the wood printed circle. Is it environmentally friendly? No. Does it help me keep the focus on the people around my table? Yes. When you know your limits & priorities, you become the expert on what’s best for you/ your family. At Jake's NoH, we partner with organizations around Eastern Wisconsin to learn about the need for items like diapers, training pants, period supplies, and adult incontinence products. We can then collaborate with these partners to help fill the need through our core programs. Our Partner, The Giving Tree, Howard-Suamico School District, recently did a survey about access to period supplies, and these were the results: What Period Products do you use? o 89% use pads or sometimes. o 85% use liners or sometimes use. o 83% use tampons. o 94% were interested in receiving products knowing they would not be name-brand. What is your interest in Thinx Period Underwear? o 31 want to learn more about Thinx. o 33 interested in purchasing for themselves or someone in the home. o 90 females interested in ordering Thinx. How often do you attend the pantry? o 69% every month. o 12% 7-9x per year. o 12% 4-6x per year. o 6% only for big events. Would having product available affect how often you attend? o 63% would attend more if receiving the product. o 28% unsure if they would attend more. o 9% would not attend more. 100% are not receiving period products from another organization. Together we will work to put an end to poverty in our communities and ensure all individuals are living f

The impact of food distribution programs on needy children is profound. By ensuring that children have access to nutritious food, these programs can help improve their academic performance, physical health, and overall quality of life. In addition, providing food to children in need can alleviate the financial burden on their families, allowing them to allocate resources to other essential needs. #satutisaijourney #satutisai #rememberingsatutisai #memory #like #follow #love #instagram #followme #photooftheday #instalike #likeforfollow #beautiful #followers #smile #likeforlike #myself #followback #comment #followforfollow

With the start of the new school year and our programs, we receive a lot of questions about the dates found on the food we distribute. 📅 👆️ Here's a quick guide on how to know what the date means and when it's time to discard food items. #CHOP #TogetherWeCan #CHOPOutHunger #VolunteerAtCHOP #ChildHungerOutreachPartners
