** Report to support the preparation of EU secondary legislation on battery performance and durability requirements ** 📜 In August 2023, the Batteries Regulation entered into force, harmonizing EU-wide rules for the entire value chain of batteries, aiming at making batteries more sustainable. As mandated in the legal text, it will be followed up by secondary legislation providing more detailed technical specifications and rules. In two pieces of secondary legislation, minimum requirements shall be introduced regarding performance and durability of LMT (e.g. e-bike) and industrial batteries (incl. stationary storage). 💡 This brand-new Technical Report is part of the technical input that the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) is providing to support the preparation of secondary legislation. ⏳ The upcoming JRC work will involve further reports, observation of standardization activities, stakeholder consultations, and assistance during legal text drafting. 🪫Battery Regulation Update: The Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission has published a technical report supporting the implementation of the new Battery Regulation. 💡Key insights: • The report offers an in-depth evaluation of performance and durability parameters for rechargeable industrial, light means of transport (LMT), and electric vehicle batteries. • It constructs an extensive data-library, drawing upon international standards, manufacturer specifications, and scientific data. This library is crucial in establishing minimum requirements for battery durability. • The primary objective is to ensure a high level of sustainability and competitiveness for the European battery market, in line with the 2050 net zero CO2 emission targets. • Unfortunately, the report does not specify the minimum accuracy of the testing apparatus and grading equipment necessary for precise battery characterization. This is a critical aspect that needs to be addressed to ensure reliable and consistent battery performance metrics. This gap is expected to be filled in subsequent iterations of the regulation. • Additionally, the document does not specify the methods to characterize batteries. As per Article 10 in the Battery Regulation, there is still room for choosing the method of choice to arrive at performance and durability parameters, but the “standards and conditions used to measure, calculate or estimate the values” need to be specified. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to navigate the evolving landscape of battery technology. #BatteryTech #SecondLife #EoL #Characterization #Sustainability #Innovation #JRC #EuropeanCommission

Registration for the Electronics Specialty Gases and Systems Conference Is Now Open. The ESGS Conference provides a unique forum of engagement and learning around the market, technology trends, and market drivers for electronic gases and critical systems. This year's conference will be held from October 22 to 24 at the Gila Rivers Resort at Wild Horse Pass in Chandler, Az. A link to the conference website is attached. The opening keynotes for the conference will be given by Joe Stockunas, President of SEMI Americas, and Christopher Borst of NY Creates. The presentations will focus on the opportunities that have emerged for semiconductor manufacturing and technology development as a result of the passage of the CHIPS Act. The conference will also address topics that include sustainability, vapor phase materials, contamination and yield control, new technology developments in specialty gases and bulk gas production by leveraging AI plant control, facility advancements focused on gas handling and abatement, new measurement and metrology technology, and reducing critical component defects. The conference will conclude with presentations on the economic outlook for the semiconductor industry and market updates on specialty and rare gases. The conference agenda can be viewed on the registration site.

Virtually every gas variant will be impacted by increased US manufacturing reshoring over the next decade. The article and our panel discussion captured many of drivers of growth in these initiatives. To me, the most important point is to be proactive, be innovative. We need more skilled trade labor, we need more welders, we need more engineers, we need more electricians, we need more coders/programmers. The states that increase the volume of these skills in their workforces are the states that will attract the most investment. It's classic chicken and egg situation. No workforce, no investment from manufacturers. No investment....no workforce development. TOMCO Systems has been working with City of Refuge, Inc. (COR) to develop a welder training/certification program for those individuals that are transitioning out of crisis by enabling them to learn applicable skills that will provide them with high paying, rewarding jobs (check it out here https://lnkd.in/eeXMWhBB). This is both a benefit to the individual, and to society. But also to the State of Georgia by being a small part of developing that highly sought after experienced workforce. If you don't know about COR yet I would highly recommend you check out their mission (https://lnkd.in/eajzuB3g) and their founder Bruce Deel. It is an amazing story and to visit COR is probably the most humbling experience you can imagine. If you would like to learn more about the welding certification program, or would like to participate please do not hesitate to connect with me. #COR #Inflationreductionact #GAWDA #gasworld #tomco #45q #45V #skilledtrades

🔋 The European #battery market is growing and so is the demand for battery equipment. So far, European mechanical and plant engineering has only been able to establish itself as a supplier to the emerging battery industry in Europe to a limited extent compared to its Asian competitors. In addition to a lack of references in the battery sector, the European mechanical and plant engineering industry has little experience in the manufacture of #turnkey systems for the battery industry. One way of encountering the existing competitive disadvantages is the formation of cooperations between equipment manufacturers. 💡 In our new short study, we shed light on the topic of mechanical and plant engineering as a strategic component of the European battery ecosystem. To assess the situation, interviews with different equipment supplier and battery cell manufacturer were conducted. We asked the interview partners: Is cooperation a key to success? 👉Read more about it in our short study: https://lnkd.in/eWWUkBaz The Market Analysis is a publication by the Accompanying Research on #BatteryCellProduction on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action. #BMWK #IPCEI #EuropeanBatteryInnovation

Inspected 10+ manufacturers of wafers, cells, modules & battery storage systems in China during the last 2 weeks. 60+% of those companies were partially (some completely) shutdown. Visited several equipment manufacturers (cells, modules and battery storages). New equipment, higher capacities with significant technology improvements are under construction, but orders for this year will be low. It's evident that Chinese PV manufacturers will fight each others, at least this and next year, to stay alive, mantain market shares and bring the most competititive products to their customers, but many companies will disappear! Chinese manufacturers are preparing the floor to allow PV to be more and more competitive: cells and modules efficiencies are continuously improving and costs are going down (90um wafer thickness are running in small volumes for testing, silver paste consumptions are lowering, 0BB will be implemented soon, strong R&D on new technologies, like tandem, perovskite...), and more!!!! Just be careful about final PV modules quality, which is difficult to control and keep constant in MASS PRODUCTION in such unstable conditions. After attending SNEC in Shanghai my feeling is that now Chinese companies are willing (forced) to collaborate more and invest in EU, US (several GW investments ongoing) and other countries to stay in the market and this is a huge opportunity. EU and US companies can select the best technologies to establish new productions in their countries, bring back the top know-how and the supply chain, and create jobs. Big difficulties for the sector this year, but also big opportunities to catch!! #MRP #PVadvisor #PVdesign #PVinspections #TopCon #HJT Mark Rossetto Marco Piccoli MRP Srl
