Access to mental health care continues to be a global issue 🌎
Not everyone who wishes to seek mental health care gets the treatment they need. Why? You may ask yourself. Besides stigma creating socio-cultural barriers to seeking help, there is an insufficient number of mental health professionals and hospital beds available. For many people, seeking mental health care can feel intimidating, complicated or unfamiliar. It’s Mental Health Awareness Month and I encourage you to prioritize your mental health because it is equally as important as physical health.
Despite the growing need for mental health care in communities across the country, stigma and difficulty accessing services make it challenging to find the right care. We at CVS Health believe that getting help to manage life’s stressors is a key part of prioritizing total well-being. MinuteClinic serves as an important resource, offering mental health counseling in person and virtually in select states, meeting consumers where they need support. https://lnkd.in/euNHpys3
Mental health concerns continue to rise across the country according to our latest survey with Morning Consult. So, how can we work to address this?
💡 According to Taft Parsons III, MD, Vice President and Chief Psychiatric Officer: “Our priority, across CVS Health, remains improving access to quality virtual and in-person mental health care and ensuring we have resources in place to address the unique needs of individuals.” In fact, since 2020, CVS Health has delivered 43 million mental health virtual visits.

May is #MentalHealthMonth and I find myself thinking about how we can better support friends, families, colleagues, and members in stamping out the stigma that surrounds mental health.
Access to care is extremely important, but it starts with education and acceptance.
Talk to your friends and colleagues.
Practice self care and mindfulness.
Show your support.
Reach out.

The availability of mental health care services affects all Oregonians.
Nearly half of the #OregonVoices survey respondents agreed that many residents struggle with mental illness in their community.
Concerningly, the youngest respondents (29 and younger) reported poor or fair mental health at higher rates than older generations.
The latest Oregon Voices research brief shines light on some of the challenges and concerns for Oregon communities when it comes to mental health care.
How is mental health care accessibility and affordability being addressed where you live? Read the brief at ORVoices.org/Health.

Unfortunately, not everyone has equal access to quality mental healthcare. This is where the concept of mental health equity comes in.
It refers to the idea that everyone, regardless of race, ethnicity, socioeconomic background, or any other factor, deserves the opportunity to get the mental health services they need.
However, achieving this goal faces some significant challenges and obstacles.

An individual who is struggling with their mental health may not bring up these feelings with their doctor. This is why universal mental health screenings are crucial – part of a lifesaving practice in the Zero Suicide Model.
By adopting Zero Suicide policies, healthcare providers can create an environment in which discussing mental well-being is not just accepted but encouraged.
Together, we can foster a culture of support that prioritizes mental health care for all.

Mental health is increasingly recognised as an integral part of overall health, yet there remains a significant gap in how we address it, particularly for individuals with complex needs.
With reforms to the Mental Health Act (1983) on the horizon, we all must follow suit.
Our team have outlined why we must place greater emphasis on mental health support when providing complex care: https://bit.ly/4fJGiDU#ComplexCare#MentalHealthMatters#MentalHealthAct
