CBAM, or the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, is a policy tool used to address carbon leakage and promote greener practices by imposing tariffs on imported goods based on their carbon content. The mechanism aims to level the playing field between domestic products, which are often subject to strict environmental regulations, and imported goods from countries with looser regulations. Why CBAM is strategic? - Climate Change Mitigation: By taxing imports based on their carbon footprint, CBAM incentivizes foreign producers to adopt cleaner technologies and reduce emissions, thereby contributing to global efforts to mitigate climate change. - Economic Competitiveness: It prevents domestic industries from being at a disadvantage compared to foreign competitors who might not face the same environmental regulations, thus maintaining fair competition. - Encouraging Global Standards: CBAM can drive international standards for carbon emissions, encouraging countries with less stringent environmental policies to enhance their climate actions. - Revenue Generation: The tariffs collected can be used to fund further climate initiatives and green technologies, creating a positive feedback loop for environmental sustainability. - Transition to a Green Economy: By making carbon-intensive goods more expensive, CBAM promotes the transition towards a low-carbon economy and supports the development of sustainable industries.
