This session aligns with the Belgian EU Presidency's focus on enhancing the valorisation of research results, transforming data and research into sustainable products that benefit society. It aims to underscore the vital role of e-Infrastructures, including #EOSC and both thematic and generic data infrastructures, in bridging the innovation gap and aligning academic research with societal, policy, and industry needs, thereby stimulating the EU’s industrial recovery and revitalisation. #OpenScience #einfrastructures #researchinfrastructures

✔ The Minister for Research and Higher Education, Oddmund Hoel, was in Brussels and met with Norwegian Research and Innovation and Higher Education Stakeholders yesterday. ✔ The Minister is impressed with Norway's participation and success rates in Horizon Europe. He stated that the strategy for Norway is to actively contribute to the next Framework Programme in line with Norwegian interests and to make the programme attractive for Norwegian actors. 💡 Sumathi Subramaniam, who is Head of the Brussels Office at NORCE, presented NORCE, our participation in Horizon Europe and our views on shaping the next Framework Programme, FP10. She also stressed the importance of strengthening RETUR-EU to support sustained and high-volume participation of Norwegian actors. ❕ In Horizon Europe NORCE has 30 per cent or higher success rates on submitted proposals, proposals coordinated and in proposals where we are partners. The future of Interreg is knocking at our door! The debate on the future of #CohesionPolicy already started last year, and now it is the right time to give concrete ideas and inputs on how Interreg should look like after 2027. Six transnational programmes (Interreg ADRION Programme, Interreg Alpine Space, Interreg CENTRAL EUROPE Programme, Interreg Euro-MED Programme, Interreg NEXT MED Programme and Interreg Sudoe Programme) jointly launched a survey through which you can let us know which topics you deem important for Interreg transnational cooperation, what you think works well, and what could be improved. Your feedback will directly inform the position of policy makers that are responsible for coming up with concrete policy proposals next year! 🌐🇪🇺 Cohesion and Interreg policies, the future is now The European Commission has opened a unified public consultation dedicated to six Interreg programmes (Interreg Euro-MED Programme, Interreg CENTRAL EUROPE Programme, Interreg IPA ADRION Programme, Interreg Alpine Space, Interreg NEXT MED, Interreg Sudoe Programme) with the aim of receiving contributions for the development of policy proposals to be implemented after 2027. To participate in the discussion, there is time until June 14th with a survey of 9 questions. On 4 and 5 June 2024, EST took part in the conference 'Research Infrastructures in a Changing Global, Environmental, and Socio-economic Context', organised by the Belgian Presidency of the European Council in collaboration with the European Roadmap for Research Infrastructures (ESFRI). In the event, held at the Royal Library of Belgium in Brussels, three main topics were addressed: research infrastructures (RIs) as key players of strategic autonomy in a changing global context, the socio-economic and environmental impact of RIs, and their broad ecosystems. In particular, the benefits and challenges of European Research Infrastructure Consortia (ERIC) were discussed, as well as their role in building a European ecosystem of science and innovation.  👉🏻 An ERIC is the specific legal entity that will make the construction and operation of EST possible. For that reason, several EST representatives attended the conference on behalf of the project and made contacts with funding agencies and other RIs that are already ERICs, thus preparing the path that EST will have to take towards construction. ☀️🔭 One of the main objectives of the EST Canarian Foundation is precisely to pave the way for the establishment of the EST ERIC. [US-Africa Session On Space Cooperation, Trade and Sustainability To Be Held During the 2024 NewSpace Africa Conference] On April 3, 2024, the second day of the NewSpace Africa Conference in Luanda, Angola, stakeholders from the United States of America and African governments, civil society, and industry will convene in a high-level meeting to foster space partnerships and commerce. This meeting continues strengthening the symbiotic relationship between the two regions in space-related endeavours. The high-level discussion will build upon key takeaways from previous meetings between both parties, which have positively assessed the potential for space activities to impact people’s lives across geographical and financial boundaries. Previous meetings include the US-Africa Commercial Space Stakeholders Meeting in October 2023, the US-Africa Space Forum in December 2022, and various sector-specific webinars and programmes addressing clean energy and climate change. The United States has been actively promoting bilateral trade and investment partnerships with Africa to enhance Africa’s participation in the global economy, foster innovation and entrepreneurship, and advance critical sectors such as the space and satellite industry. This meeting will spotlight critical areas of collaboration within the African space market that the US can capitalise on, how African governments can bolster trade and investment-enabling environments, and how to promote opportunities for Africans and Americans to engage in joint space endeavours to foster development. Additionally, the United States’s strategy to support and mobilise private capital to fuel business growth, job creation, and greater U.S. participation in the African space ecosystem will be discussed. Discussions will also focus on aligning U.S. space cooperation with the unique needs of African countries by defining models that incorporate tailored solutions to address each nation’s specific requirements rather than adopting a one-size-fits-all approach. The African Space Leadership Institute congratulates Fernand ISSERI on his election/appointment into the African Space Council, during the ongoing mid-year coordination meeting of the African Union (AU), in Accra, Ghana. "The African Space Council is charged with coordinating the activities of the African Space Agency, guiding continental space policymaking, resource allocation, and regulatory oversights, and managing African space industry stakeholders, including governments and international partners, to facilitate favourable partnerships in space science and technology." The African Space Agency (AfSA) was established in 2018. In 2019, Egypt was selected to host the headquarters of the agency and in 2023, the agency was formally inaugurated. Efforts are on to get the agency operational. The Council consist of 16 members - 10 elected members from Member States and 6 members from the African Union Commission (AUC). While the elected members have voting powers, the members from AUC have no voting powers. Earlier in the year, during the 37th AU Summit, 8 members were elected/appointed, namely: Dr. Tidiane Ouattara - West Africa (President of the Council) Dr. Baba-maaji, Rakiya - West Africa Thandikile Mbvundula - Southern Africa (Vice President of the Council) Dr Lisho Mundia (he/him) - Southern Africa Aboubaker Hassan - East Africa Eliane Ubalijoro - East Africa amal layachi - North Africa Amin Mestar - North Africa "The Council will ensure that investments align strategically with continental objectives, including those outlined in Africa 2063, prioritising advancements in space exploration, research, technology, and indigenous capacity development. The Council will facilitate collaboration in space exploration and research through local, regional, continental, and international cooperation, promoting mutual benefits and peaceful endeavours for all Africans." One elected representative is still expected from the Central region. The process is expected to be completed during the next AU Summit in February 2025. We wish the Council success as the they carry out their mandate.

The 19th Meeting of The Sectoral Council of Ministers Responsible for Education, Science, and Technology held on 22 June 2024 in Dar Es Salaam -Tanzania at Four Points by Sheraton has approved the EAC Regional Space Science and Technology Strategy for implementation. EAC Regional Space Strategy is aimed at well-coordinated and effective utilization of space science and technology for East Africa growth and development, and promoting integrated EAC outer space program for an innovative and competitive STI sector. EAC Space Strategy seek to enhance the access to Space services and grow the demand for Space services through effective and efficient service delivery and industry coordination.
