A small number of women in executive roles in any industry is a concern, but particularly so for retail, where women dominate purchasing decisions. Ahead of International Women’s Day on 8 March, Drapers have published their annual survey of fashion retail companies listed on the FTSE and Aim markets. The results show a mixed picture of improvement on female representation in the boardroom but a reduction in the number of women in executive leadership roles. When e.l.f. Cosmetics launched their recent 'Change the Board Game' campaign, our ears pricked up. For their campaign 'So Many Dicks', the popular beauty brand teamed up with Oberland Agency to pull data on some of the largest US-based companies. Their findings were predictably bleak, showing there are more men named Richard, Rick or Dick than women and diverse groups by a landslide. Some praised e.l.f. for drawing attention to an important issue; others felt the campaign, especially the tagline, trivialized the topic of diversity. Meanwhile, on a third track - and this is the one that got us - lots of people took offence to diversity being promoted. They argued that job roles, especially in leadership and board positions, should be based on qualifications and experience rather than focusing on diversity. THIS is why we’re speaking up - to break the myth that by fishing in a bigger pool, we’re somehow compromising on catching the ‘best candidate’.
