Fascinating insights in this new blog post from Hannes Read at City-REDI, University of Birmingham, on the transformative power of PhD study - not just for the individual, but for communities, businesses and society as a whole. The post unpacks how PhD programs can drive the civic mission of universities by: - Directing research to address important local challenges - Embedding doctoral training to support regional economic needs - Linking PhD work with key business sectors to maximise impact - Harnessing the economic and social benefits of PhDs As universities look to strengthen their civic engagement, reimagining PhD programs provides a major opportunity. But it will require a strategic focus on aligning research with the needs of people and places. National Civic Impact Accelerator

There's been recent research showing that school districts have made some strides in climbing out of the huge academic holes blown open by the pandemic -- particularly in math, but also in reading. In a new story in EdWeek Market Brief, we write about the results of a survey of district and school leaders by the EdWeek Research Center on where they see "learning loss" as most severe in core academic subjects, as well as in #socialemotionallearning. The findings have implications for the academic interventions school systems across the country are staging, and for the money they're devoting to them. #tutoring #edtech https://rebrand.ly/n0i1cal

Our libraries and library systems are vital institutions of foundational and lifelong learning. They are dynamic hubs that democratize access to art, education, and essential resources while anchoring communities as free and open spaces for all people. Libraries serve as bastions of intellectual freedom and a refuge for all people, regardless of wealth or background, in a time where those qualities are needed most. With a changing federal landscape and future funding for the Institute of Museum and Library Services uncertain, we need you to tell Governor Hochul increased funding is imperative to ensuring libraries continue to serve as an indispensable resource for education, culture, and community.
