This week on Bunkerspot, we invited representatives from some of the key climate action #NGOs and #sustainableshipping #consultants and advocates to share their wish list of outcomes from the 81st meeting of the Marine Environment Protection Committee taking place at the International Maritime Organization's London headquarters next week. In a milestone for the shipping industry’s low-carbon #energytransition, the Fortescue Green Pioneer became the first ship to use ammonia as a bunker fuel, in combination with diesel in the combustion process, during a trial in Singapore. #Carbon #trading specialist Vertis Environmental Finance and Azolla Pte Ltd, the decarbonisation vertical of Synergy Marine Group Group, agreed an exclusive partnership aimed at helping #shipowners align with the European Union Emissions Trading System and upcoming global #decarbonisation regulations. Meanwhile, #maritime #dataanalysis company OceanScore warned that vessel operators switching to Cape of Good Hope routes to avoid the volatile Red Sea region could see a near tripling of their EU Emissions Trading System liabilities. In other news, a total of 4,509,330 metric tonnes of #marinefuels (including alternative fuels) was sold in #Singapore last month – 18.8% up on the 3,796,920 mt that was recorded in February 2023; a new study found that the use of high-throughput sequencing technologies could be a ‘valuable tool’ in showing the impact of ships’ scrubber effluents on the #marine environment; and the UNIMOT S.A. Group informed us that it has now entered #Poland’s bunker market, making its first delivery on Monday in #Gdynia to Fairplay Towage Polska’s Fairplay VII. The UK and Ireland are collaborating on a first-of-its-kind project: 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗼𝗿𝘀 connecting their ports. This green initiative emphasizes the de-carbonization of maritime emissions which has surged up to 20% in the past decade, according to UNCTAD. Parker Maritime commends the Tunley team on this well researched piece. “Biofouling on hulls increases fuel consumption by up to 40 %. This leads to a proportional increase in CO2e emissions and harmful pollutants. Combining effective antifouling paints with regular removal of biofouling has a major role to play in maintaining fuel efficiency regardless of the fuel used. Hull drag can also be reduced by air lubrication, where bubbles are generated by supplying air to the ship’s hull, reducing fuel usage by up to 10 %.” https://lnkd.in/ggUn_Ydg

The maritime industry needs strong political leadership to reach net-zero.   Shipping is responsible for around 3% of global emissions. The biggest maritime polluter is deep-sea shipping, representing 90% of these 3. Right now, the price gap between sustainable fuels and fossil fuels is too high.   We need a well-defined regulatory framework and contract for differences, enabling us to persuade customers to choose sustainable fuels as soon as possible. With more political leadership comes more predictability on sustainable fuel prices. With more predictability comes more sustainable decisions. From producers, from off-takers, from customers. The article serves as a reminder (to me) to refresh my knowledge of what is happening on the "cold ironing" front. The recent past years have seen a series of initiatives on such topic, initiatives that seem to have slowed down; it has been a while since I have read anything and, from memory, the recent articles where on activities within Spanish and Northern Europe ports. As an Italian I wish to know more of what is happening in my country, as Italy is a beautiful touristic destination and such ships are not an unusual sight in Italian waters... #coldironing #electrification #shipconversion #emissionreductions #portservices
