NeoCon was awesome, but here is my highlight for the week: a personal video from Jesse Cole, owner of the Savannah Bananas.
The Savanna Bananas are a baseball team that has done for baseball what Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group has done for the circus.
So why am I interested?
Our industry is stuck in a 3 three-ring circus of #RTO, #Hybrid, and #WellBeing.
William Gibson coined the phrase, "The future is already here, just not evenly distributed." We break from the past by finding positive outliers and learning their journey. That's not the same as copying their "formula."
I recommend you buy Jesse's book, "Fans First."
Jesse's video walks his talk and ignited my fan experience.
Was it expensive to do? No
Was it hard to do? No
Did it send me over the top with enthusiasm? Absolutely
What would it look like to create a culture of:
Employees First
Customers First
This is the start of my conversation with the Savannah Bananas.
Here is a link to Jesse's book: https://a.co/d/ixiMDQv
Some artists focus on their art. Some do that AND they're part-time superheroes.
In the past, there had been some umms and ahhhs about whether it was gracious to publicly announce your efforts.
I think in our day and age it's integral. It's absolutely vital.
Why?
The world is more competitive than ever. It's also more interconnected than ever.
So?
1. We must be transparent.
2. Our actions must speak for themselves.
3. There can be no question about who we are.
4. The world already knows who we are.
5. We advertise who we are so we can collaborate around the WORLD in every single market. UNIVERSALLY.
6. In our day and age, we are our philosophy, our image, our feelings, our actions, our words, our thoughts, our fashion, our appearance, our reality. It's all the same thing.
Unequivocally us.
These are just a few reasons. But I see this? And I know. I like this guy. Who wouldn't like this guy? Who couldn't?
Thought Experiment
You're a youth in a youth centre. You have access to:
Football pitches, a music studio, gaming room, 'and more!'
What on Earth is AND MORE? If everything before that seemed pretty 'extra'. What could be more?
Ask yourself. How would you feel as a youth in 2024? About your city? Your country? About your culture? Your day and age? Yourself? Your life and your blessings?
How would you feel about Stormzy? And Adidas and EA Sports?
This is why we must spell out exactly who does what and EXACTLY what it all means.
So much.
When our businesses and industries and icons and thought leaders explain and demonstrate what progress and nobility and benevolence look like in 2024?
We can all take notes. I know I do.
And when you read the news and social media
CRITICALLY and
EMPATHETICALLY and
SYMPATHETICALLY and
HUMBLY and
AS A STUDENT?
Then I believe it's safe to say you're safe and sound. You're a human being in 2024.
I try too. But the news now is so touching.
Genuinely.
Can you imagine what those youths will feel?
Who would've ever shown them such generosity?
For me, Adidas and EA sports already have so much good stuff in the bank. They redefined music and gaming cultures around the world. We all know why and how. Again. And again.
But kindness and the healing of all human dignity? That's not just a 'social responsibility'. No.
That's KARMA. That's branding, that's advertising, that's marketing, that's business development. And it all says the same thing.
WE ACTUALLY CARE AND ACT LIKE IT. Unequivocally. So when businesses can do this? By the time there's a PR issue?
It already has complete context.
'Wait. Don't you remember the million things they do for the community, the countless people they employ, the culture and the arts they support, and the industries they collaborate with and how important they are to societies around the world from Europe, to China to the US and everywhere? And what happened exactly?'
Actions>words.
Right on.
Congratulations to all involved and to every lucky youth!

Rapper Stormzy has launched a youth center in South London, equipped with football pitches, a music studio, gaming room, and more! He's partnering with adidas and Electronic Arts (EA) to make it happen! ⚽
I love Stormzy no matter what, but with youth clubs being few and far between across the UK, this new launch really has my heart.
The website says, "#MERKY FC HQ IS A FOOTBALL AND COMMUNITY CENTRE IN SELHURST, DESIGNED TO NURTURE THE VOICES OF TOMORROW. PURPOSE-BUILT WITH A FULL-SIZE 3G PITCH, RECORDING STUDIO, AND GAMING ROOM, IT’S A SAFE SPACE FOR ALL TO EXPRESS THEMSELVES."
With all the nonsense going on in the world, I'm glad we've got people like Stormzy championing the youth and making safe spaces for them to be themselves! 🙏

I can't believe it's the 20th anniversary of one of the most influential games of my “youth” (I’m being liberal with the term here!), "Def Jam Fight for NY" https://lnkd.in/eP-TtJp2. I can't thanks visionaries like Daryl Anselmo, Josh Holmes, Lauren Wirtzer Seawood, and Kevin Liles enough for having the vision to bring us this game!
I was never a fan of fighting games until Def Jam took its unmatched roster and put all my favorite rappers in a game that was one part fighting, one part wrestling, and every part hip-hop. To some, a video game entrenched in hip-hop culture was a risky venture, even at a time when hip was ascending to new levels of popularity. To some, it's still a risk (as I know all too well!).
What I loved most about the Def Jam fighting games was that every rapper that appeared in the game was able to share so much of their personalities with fans, from catchphrases and punchlines to finishing moves and personal styles. There was nothing like listening to the latest Clue tape while squaring off in a game with your favorite rapper.
When you dive into the story and success behind this collaboration between Electronic Arts (EA) and Def Jam Recordings, you can’t help but wonder why there aren't more games that represent hip-hop culture being made. Def Jam’s fighting games released before we had games on mobile devices and before hip-hop had achieved the levels of worldwide popularity and commercial success it enjoys today (for better or worse…but let’s not get into that!) and it still did incredible numbers.
This is one of the games that has been the greatest influence on what we’re building at 13th Bridge Games Studio. Run The Court owes a great deal to the team that built the Def Jam games. Like those games, we will be incorporating real world personalities into a fictional universe and enabling those individuals from the world of sports and music to tell their stories, promote their work, and connect with their fans. We have mechanics that pay homage to Fight for NY (as well as other favorites like NBA Jam) and a storyline that revolves around a mysterious and powerful group of individuals involved in an illicit underground competition. And of course, we will be infusing hip hop and basketball cultures into every aspect of the game, from the brands and individuals we work with to the music we feature and the geographies we create.
If this is the kind of game you want to work on, let's connect! We have a playable demo built with a leading studio partner and we're building the team to take this forward!
Digital creative media, like a lot of industries, has had a wild ride in the last few years and faced its fair share of challenges. Dramatic rapid changes in media consumption habits and business models, fluctuating production constraints and escalating costs, and flat consumer spending against a backdrop of rising prices have been difficult to navigate for VFX, animation, and videogames studios.
The digital creative community in Wellington has not been exempt from these challenges. But with typical Kiwi spirit, we've spent the last couple of years with heads down, grinding away, working past these issues and towards the new opportunities that such industry turbulence also brings.
Earlier this week Variety covered some of the fruits of that effort, and looking ahead to what will be a new era for the Wellington industry as consumers, media publishers, and platforms around the world look for high quality, innovative, cost effective, and globally relevant media and media production partnerships https://lnkd.in/gbaveV29https://lnkd.in/g765Dshx
