Uzbekistan has plenty of policy on the books at the national level to help its farmers who are being pummeled by soil and water salinity, losing crops and land in the process. But little of that is translating into actual help, and some of the country's major export crops are suffering, hitting the economy. My latest, for Nikkei Asia. Thanks to Kenneth Maxwell for guiding this one.

CENTRAL ASIA BLOG: Cautionary tale as onion prices crash amid glut on a "tragic" scale #bne #bneEditorsPicks #Uzbekistan #KAzakhstan #agriculture If you’ve an appetite for lashings and lashings of French onion soup then Uzbekistan is the place to be right now. According to trade experts, you can buy one kilogram of onions for as little as $0.12. Estimates suggest that due to what the trade news and analysis site EastFruit refers to as “tragic onion overproduction”, somewhere between 150,000-200,000 tonnes of onions may end up being discarded or used as cattle feed in Uzbekistan. A similar story is playing out in Kazakhstan and other parts of Central Asia. It’s a desperate situation for farmers and a cautionary tale.

This is a Podcast done by Jacques Pienaar, who provides Scipion Capital Ltd. with weekly commodity reports. This is worth listening to and we have his approval post it - https://lnkd.in/efu6fDkp As Scipion Capital Ltd. has been engaging with the maize growers and local millers it is clear that the harvest season for maize in Eastern and Southern Africa is fast approaching a severe shortage due to drought. The weather patterns being as always different from one part of East/Southern Africa to another, some countries will experience shortfalls such as South Africa and Zambia, traditional regional exporters whilst Tanzania is expected to have a surplus. With the prohibitive cost of long-distance transport across the African Continent it is expected that the projected deficit of 1.2 million tonnes will come from as far afield as Latin America In Scipion Capital Ltd.’s view a key driver in the long term would be improved access to irrigation across the maize growing countries and therefore provide a more stable production for the preferred and widely consumed white maize. #foodsecurity #commodityfinance #supplychainfinance #tradefinance
