What opportunities can hype cycles bring? Union Square Ventures co-founder Brad Burnham shared what he’s learned from decades of venture investing in conversation with M13 Partner Latif Peracha at this year's Future Perfect. A few highlights: 1. Hype cycles bring innovation opportunities: "Without that financial bubble, without that enthusiasm, you don't get the experiments that you need in order to put the infrastructure in place to build real systems,” Brad says. "[At USV] we made the argument that we were through the initial crash of the information technology hype cycle, and that we were going to be building now into what Carlota Perez called the deployment period. That’s when a lot of the technologies that were first introduced in the crash actually became important." 2. Adaptability is key: "It's our job to figure out how to live with these new problems. It's not the job of the technology or the market to make it easy for us,” says Brad. 3. Focus on implications: Both investors encouraged looking at the implications of a technology, not just the technology itself. Thinking beyond the infrastructure or core technical pieces brings a huge number of meaningful opportunities. How can startups build effective tech partnerships as public servants? "You have to meet any market where it’s at. Sometimes having 10x better technology alone isn’t enough," says Prepared founder Michael Chime. At our annual Future Perfect conference, Michael discussed removing blocks to innovation as founders working with public entities—and why for Prepared, finding success was about more than just offering better technology. “It’ll be a time saver, but most of all, it’s a lifesaver.” M13 portfolio company Prepared is using AI to make emergency situations safer for both 911 callers and responders. Its Prepared Assist technology is bringing built-for-landlines 911 infrastructure into the future, giving dispatchers real-time GPS information, audio transcription, and other vital data to make it easier to assess and respond to emergency situations. According to one 911 Systems Manager, “What Prepared Assist has done is essentially take all those [different] tools and bring them into one platform. In previous times, we would have to look at three or four different screens to be able to accomplish these types of tasks.” Learn more at https://lnkd.in/e4kTG-YN #AI #safetytech Michael Chime, Dylan Gleicher, Neal Soni

🚨 Big news: Apple is leveraging assistive-AI platform Prepared to bring 911 call processing into a safer future. Prepared’s life-saving 911 technology is becoming available to all iPhone users, allowing callers in emergency situations to share crucial information—including live video, photos, text, and location data—with emergency response teams. With the release of iOS 18 this fall, 911 dispatchers empowered by Prepared technology will be able see exactly what iPhone users see at emergency scenes in real-time with Emergency SOS Live Video. In other words: 150 million US iPhone users will be protected by technology that makes emergency situations safer both for callers and first responders. Congratulations to co-founders Michael Chime, Dylan Gleicher, Neal Soni, and the whole Prepared team on this huge milestone! Learn more at: https://lnkd.in/ez-B3YCX

Congratulations, Prepared, on the new integration with Apple! This is a game changer for emergency situations, allowing 911 callers to share live video updates directly with dispatchers and first responders.
To get callers the help they need, you have to meet them where they are. Today, we're proud to announce that 911 callers using Apple iPhone® can share live video directly with ECCs through a native integration with Prepared. This integration will make it easier than ever before for callers to show exactly what's happening on-scene. Since launch in fall 2021, Prepared has seen video-to-911 prove lifesaving in our nationwide partner agencies time and time again. From stranded free climbers to cardiac arrests to volcano response, the ability to gain instant eyes-on-scene drives more efficient and effective emergency response. At the end of last year, M13 Partner and Head of Product Rob Smith predicted that M&A—and specifically AI acquihires—would pick up in 2024. "As AI talent needs skyrocket and supply lags, acquihires for good AI teams will start to happen more frequently and competitively. This mirrors the acquihire booms that followed approximately 1–3 years after rises in machine learning and mobile apps during their ensuing talent shortages," he said. Business Insider recently reported that "M&A dealmaking among AI startups is already off to a strong start this year, with 55 exits recorded in Q1 of 2024, per Crunchbase data."
