Decarbonising infrastructure is the new business as usual. And it connects directly to the new climate risk reporting regime that is being introduced for companies. At today's Australian Institute of Company Directors Australian Governance Summit 2024 there was insightful discussion on the energy transition and climate governance with Larry Marshall Karen Moses FAICD John Lydon and Christian Gergis. A key concern is how government policy settings will enable companies to credibly report on and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. Recently published advice from Infrastructure Victoria helps bridge the gap between government emissions reduction efforts and corporate climate risk reporting requirements. Our Advice on Opportunities to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions of Infrastructure provides practical recommendations on how governments can work with corporate partners to reduce, measure and report on emissions of public infrastructure. Vice President for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion Justice @ The Alliance for Climate Transition | Talent Strategy
Yesterday, the Massachusetts Senate achieved a significant milestone by passing Bill S.2829, An Act Upgrading the Grid and protecting ratepayers. This pivotal climate bill aims to enhance the state's clean energy infrastructure, paving the way for Massachusetts to reach net-zero emissions. The introduction of robust community review processes underscores the importance of engaging stakeholders in the permitting process, ensuring that local voices are heard from the onset. By involving local interests early on, we can identify and address potential conflicts swiftly, leading to the construction of projects in appropriate locations. This collaborative approach not only empowers communities but also enables them to advocate for increased benefits from clean energy developers. Clean energy and transmission projects have the potential to bring numerous advantages to host communities, and by fostering community engagement, we can ensure that these projects have a positive impact on the areas they serve. #MassachusettsSenate #CleanEnergy #CommunityEngagement #ClimateBill #NetZeroEmissions #NECEC
💡 🌱 New Climate Legislation Approved By Massachusetts Senate 💡 🌱 Yesterday, the Massachusetts Senate approved a wide-ranging climate bill that will systematically address the state’s clean energy infrastructure needs. Bill S.2829, An Act upgrading the grid and protecting ratepayers, will put Massachusetts on track to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. 🌟 Key Highlights 🌟 - New siting and permitting provisions, paired with robust community review processes, that will expedite project timelines, courtesy of stakeholders at the Commission on Energy Infrastructure Siting and Permitting. - Consideration of the cost-effectiveness of grid-enhancing technologies and battery storage for all proposals for capital improvement in the grid - Provisions to advance the deployment of electric vehicles along with solar, wind, and storage facilities “The Senate has heard loud and clear from residents, advocates, and clean energy leaders. Today we are taking action to make it easier and more efficient to build clean energy infrastructure so that Massachusetts can deliver on our climate commitments.” - Karen Spilka, Senate President NECEC is proud to have played a pivotal role in the passage of this legislation. Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) are widely used to assess the energy efficiency of buildings. However, recent research reveals a critical disconnect between EPC ratings and actual fossil fuel consumption in commercial properties. This misalignment may lead to the misevaluation of assets and ineffective environmental policies, posing significant risks to both the property sector and broader climate goals. Read more in our recent policy briefing by Dr Jecel Tandoc Censoro on how we must consider revising the EPC framework to better capture fossil fuel exposure and guide sustainable investment and retrofitting efforts: ➡ https://lnkd.in/eNtqVvYj

The First Nations Clean Energy Strategy presents an important and timely opportunity to address significant existing inequity and disadvantage, and identify opportunities for First Nations communities to lead, participate in and benefit from the energy transition. Our key recommendations: ✅ People have a right to energy that is affordable, reliable and clean ✅ Energy should be embedded as a right in energy law and rules ✅ The First Nations Clean Energy Strategy should set purposeful, ambitious and measurable targets that deliver clear benefits to First Nations communities and consumers ✅ Policy and program design should actively consider where consumers encounter obstacles in making a decision ✍️ Read our submission to the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) on the First Nations Clean Energy Strategy Consultation Paper: https://loom.ly/vdgwVP4

2024 kicks off with a whirlwind of climate initiatives - from major emission regulations to distributing billions for clean energy, the race is on before November's ballots. Some key focuses this year include: - Regulations on pollution from fossil fuel power plants - Fuel efficiency standards for cars, and trucks - Limits on toxic wastewater from coal-fired power plants - Distributing the billions of dollars available through the IRA On top of these priorities, the EPA is expected to announce leadership by March for the $14 billion National Clean Investment Fund - the largest climate grant program in history which will provide financing for thousands of clean energy projects. It's another great day at the Colorado Energy Office. $129M was anounced for CEO from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)'s #ClimatePollutionReduction grant. #Colorado's application includes 1) methane emissions monitoring and capture projects that have a large potential for emissions reduction but need additional study and funding, 2) funding for large commercial buildings which are a major source of emissions and are hard to decarbonize, and 3) support for local governments who have a major role in reducing emissions in several key sectors of the economy, and the urgent need to increase their capacity to do that work. https://lnkd.in/gPYZpwrd
