🌐 What's happening at the #WSIS+20 Forum High-Level Event (WSIS Process) in Geneva? Check out WACC General Secretary Philip Lee, D.D. (h.c.)'s notes from Day 2: "Inclusion is at the heart of everything we do," stated Doreen Bogdan-Martin, Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) on WSIS+20 Forum Day 2. Themes discussed included the digital economy - which some refer to as the data economy - and how digital technologies can be used to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. Business and regulatory leaders talked about "When Policy Meets Progress: Shaping a Fit for Future Digital World" and "Leading in the Digital Era: How can the Public Sector prepare for the AI age?" A related topic was the Global Digital Compact, which is anticipated to be launched at the UN Summit of the Future later this year. The Compact aims to tackle the gap in digital preparedness between developed and developing countries. Forum participants heard - some with a touch of scepticism - that the Compact will lead to "policies that could accelerate a reduction of that digital divide and allow micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises in developing regions to participate more equitably, and benefit more, in the digital economy." In this respect, on May 28 the ITU, the UN Agency for Digital Technologies, announced USD 4.8 billion dollars in investment commitments toward global connectivity. The announcement brings the total pledges aimed at closing the digital divide through ITU's #Partner2Connect Digital Coalition (P2C) to USD 50.96 billion, over half the USD 100 billion goal set for 2026. The new commitments include pledges that leverage AI as a means of enhancing digital access, adoption, and inclusion. For many, the watchwords at the WSIS+20 Forum remain meaningful connectivity, multistakeholder participation, diversity, pluralism, and respect for human dignity. #DigitalJustice #GlobalDigitalCompact #SummitOfTheFuture #ACommonFuture #CommunicationForAll #GlobalGoals

Fayeann L. Lawrence and I are eagerly anticipating our attendance at the upcoming United Nations Summit of the Future Action Days. We are looking forward to delving into the #GlobalDigitalCompact, which aims to advance an inclusive, universal, and meaningful vision of technology and innovation. In my eyes, a #DigitalFutureForAll looks like this: 1. Envisioning a world where every individual, regardless of age, can share meaningful moments virtually, fostering a sense of closeness and connectivity. 2. Aspiring for a digital library accessible to every child, promoting equitable access to knowledge and fostering a culture of lifelong learning. 3. Envisioning a future where precision agriculture, empowered by digital tools, enables sustainable and efficient farming practices for the benefit of communities worldwide. 4. Striving for a digitally inclusive economy where small businesses can seamlessly engage with global markets, contributing to the prosperity and growth of local economies. 5. Imagining a future where remote medical consultations enhance healthcare accessibility, addressing the needs of underserved communities and promoting well-being.
This September, the Secretary-General of the United Nations will convene the Summit of the Future Action Days at the UN Headquarters in New York. ⭐ On 21 September, SDG Digital—a key component of the digital track of the Action Days—will exemplify how digital technologies can lay the groundwork for a more sustainable, inclusive, and responsible future. This event will bring together leaders from all sectors to explore the future of digital and emerging technologies, uncovering trends, risks, and opportunities ahead. 🌐 SDG Digital is co-convened by the International Telecommunication Union and UNDP, in collaboration with the Office of the UN Secretary-General’s Envoy on Technology on the Digital Futures Track of the Summit of the Future Action Days. 💡 What is your vision of a digital future for all? Giga was highlighted in the Global Digital Compact Zero Draft published by the Office of the UN Secretary-General’s Envoy on Technology as one of key drivers to close the digital divide and accelerate progress across the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Under the cluster 1 on connectivity, Giga plays a key role in mapping and connecting schools globally to provide children with reliable and affordable internet access, supporting SDGs 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and 4 (Quality Education). The Global Digital Compact, envisioned as part of the United Nations's Common Agenda, is expected to be agreed at the Summit of the Future in September 2024 through a technology track with multi-stakeholder participation. This will establish a global framework for addressing critical digital issues by 2030. Read the report: https://lnkd.in/di_EgJKf

We live in a #digital world rife with opportunities and challenges, but those opportunities are not equally distributed. Nearly half of the ~6 million schools in the world are not connected to the #Internet, mostly in the poorest countries and areas. More than 500 million students have no access to the Internet. #ConnectEverySchool is enshrined in the draft Global Digital Compact, to be adopted at this year's Summit of the Future. Through Giga we aim to contribute to better education and health outcomes #ForEveryChild.
