When gatekeepers say, "S/he doesn't meet with sales reps," that doesn't include you. The perception of a "sales rep" is someone who is there to "sell something." Enter every office, hospital, or clinic with a Mission Mindset! You're there to inform, solve and prevent problems, and to make a difference in patient care. Most sales reps open with an "I want to show the Dr. something" approach. Presenting a value proposition that would appeal to the targeted stakeholder is infinitely more effective. What is the desired outcome your product provides? How does it solve a problem? Yes, your ultimate goal IS to sell something...that's how you get paid. Your income needs, however, won't motivate HCPs to buy. Helping them to understand how you can improve their situation or their patients' situation will. Make it all about them, their practice, and the patient. ⬇️⬆️ Medical sales is a relationship business. True and false. Don’t confuse relationships with product fit. Story - (saw with my own eyes) There was a certain rep converting surgeons left and right. He was so busy he had to bring on an associate. They split his territory and hired another associate. It was blowing up over a few years. It was truly remarkable. I thought wow this guy has it figured out. I just couldn’t put my finger on it. I saw him at conferences and he was talking to all the heavy hitters. I had to figure out his magic. He was a very likable guy. He had at least 2 surgeons attending a course every month. Like shooting fish in a barrel. 🛑 Then it all stopped overnight for the rep. This is when I realized what he had going for him was product fit and not true buying relationships. He left that company to work for the competition. One would make the assumption that at least half of the surgeons would move with him. (It’s never as high as people think) Not one surgeon converted. Why? Previously, what he sold no one else had. When surgeons had a choice they didn’t choose that rep. Remember this => ✅ Product fit is important and can get you in the room. ✅✅ But trusting relationships weather the storm and changes. ⁉️If your customer had Carte Blanche to do what they want, would they choose you? If you remain in medical device long enough, sooner or later you're likely to have a prospect or customer treat you in a less than pleasant or professional way. There was a well-known racist surgeon in my territory who let me know in no uncertain terms that he didn't care for where I grew up or my last name. I walked out dumbfounded and thought, "F this guy. I'm not going to call on him any more and if the company doesn't like it, they can fire me." Then I spoke to my Uncle who was a sales legend in textile industry. When I told him my plan to just write the guy off, here's what he said. "When prospects or customers mistreat you, make fun of you, lie to you, deceive you, or offend you, here's what you do to the S.O.B..." "You sell them something. You're in sales. The only way you win is when you sell them something." I fought my resistance and just kept calling on the guy. I had nothing to lose, and it was my way of letting him know he couldn't intimidate me. He eventually complained to my company that I was calling on him too much. I got a call from the Area Vice President who asked me, "Are you trying to antagonize the guy?" I said, "No. I'm trying to sell him something." The AVP said, "Good job. Keep trying." I only scored a few sales out of the guy in the eight years I called on him. He'd only call me when he couldn't source what he needed anywhere else. "You Won't Ever Break into Medical Device Sales" I got told I woudn't break into Medical Device Sales without prior Medical/or Sales experience I got told I wouldn't be able to come in as a Full Line Rep with the Largest Company in the world with no experience I got told I wouldn't perform in the industry because I didn't have experience I got told I wouldn't be a top 10 performer at One of the Largest Medical Device Companies I got told I wouldn't be able to be a Regional manager without 7+ years experience I got told I wouldn't be able to Perform as a Regional Manager I got told I wouldn't be able to help 1000's of others break into the exact same industry without the "required" background What I've been told I never will achieve started way before Medical Device Sales and it will continue to be said as I keep living my life But....All I've learned so far in this life is everything that is "impossible" is actually possible. Don't let others put limits on you that they put on themselves. The reason I've accomplished everything so far in this life that I have is because I've never focus on what people told me was impossible, but focused on what God put on my heart to know it's possible.
