US presidential campaigns have changed dramatically — because of the explosion of new media, and because Trump amped the natural theatrics of politics to stratospheric levels — TV news often still operates like it’s in the 1990s. It’s an expert-driven affair, saddled with the weight of decades-old media habits and traditions. The self-serious anchors in skyboxes. The somewhat-balanced talking head panels. The eat-your-vegetables policy coverage and the horse race-tracking bluster. And the mainstream commentariat, which alternates between pearl-clutching and ostrich-in-the-sand normalizing and both-sides equivocating, still hasn’t fully figured out how to cover Trump’s eruptions or capture the mood of his voters.

BREAKING: Ipsos rankings for Top20 news sites in Australia are out today, and The New York Times enters top10 for the first time ever*. news.com.au stays No1 at 12.6m & Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) News 2nd on 11.4m. Guardian Australia had the biggest audience growth in the Top10, but still 7th on 7.67m, behind The Sydney Morning Herald in 6th with 7.76m Some big movements in December. For the first time ever (*I'm pretty sure), The New York Times are in the Top10 most read news websites in Australia. BBC News up to 13th. Both join publishers who, like Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) Australia News, can say they are more widely read than any NewsCorp newspaper's website. DailyMail retake 4th spot, pushing Seven News back to 5th. Some wild changes in the bottom half of the table. The Courier-Mail (+6 spots to 14th), SkyNewsOz and @People (??) had massive growth. HeraldSun -3 spots, TheOz -5 spots. FOX SPORTS Australia were 15th in Nov & DailyTele 18th, but neither made the Dec top20 list. For a look back at the Ipsos Australia Iris news website rankings in Australia for November, I'll post a link in the comments.
