Pharmacist Development Manager | Training Program Director @ Rowlands Pharmacy and HEIW | Independent Prescriber. 15 years pharmacy leadership and development experience.
It's been a good week for pharmacy education. With the Wales CPD strategy consultation coming to a close and attending the Clinical Pharmacy Congress to build networks and learn about how we can support the pharmacy workforce whilst sharing learnings across sectors. With so much going on the key questions continue to move around how we can all implement workforce change in highly pressured systems. It's good to see the will to make the future of pharmacy a success is ever present. #CPCongress #pharmacydevelopment #communitypharmacy

Did you know? As part of their patient care education, student pharmacists engage in human patient simulations. By using actors trained to portray real patients, tailored simulations allow you to learn effective communication and receive feedback in a clinical setting. These simulations prepare you not only to interact with patients, but also can provide valuable experience working in a professional team made up of future nurses, pharmacists, physicians and social workers. Creative & Analytical Self-starter; independently generate new concepts. I OWN THE CONCEPT: QUALITYHEALTH.PERSONALVISION which can be found on Facebook.
I have issues with one size fits all dosing of current practices in “modern” society.
When I took the California Pharmacy Board in 1990 it was a written exam with short answer questions. YOU HAD TO WRITE A PARAGRAPH IN ENGLISH. It was not an easy exam. The idea was to maintain the quality of the profession which also kept wages strong. Then the chain drugstores put representatives on the Board of Pharmacy. They allowed MANY more Pharmacy schools to open. I’ve lost count. There were only three in 1990. Then California trashed their own Board exam for the NABPLEX, which is strictly multiple choice (guess?). As a preceptor for the past two decades, I’ve seen the quality of the Pharmacy students deminish. This article confirms what I experienced firsthand. Pharmacy remains a noble most-trusted profession. But for how long?

I suggest to anyone who has the time to look at the outcomes of bariatric surgery. What is the connection between bariatric surgery outcomes & the latest GLP-1 RA & GIP/GLP-1 RA medications? Basically, the human intestines are not identical. Some bariatric outcomes are amazing, and high blood sugars are cured or appear to be cured by surgery. Yet, other people are challenged with either low blood sugars post surgery or do not lose the expected amount of weight. This is likely the result of differences in pre-surgery dietary intake and intestinal health. I have pulled over 200 peer-reviewed papers on bariatric surgery & as many available peer-reviewed papers on the incretin responses to diet and medication. I assure my readers, we have not figured out the diet/incretin/microbiome responses correctly. Research experts do not have definitive answers which leads me to push stress management, plus diet and exercise, as the best strategy to manage & prevent our modern metabolism problems.

It’s time to meet another member of the MAPflow team! Say hello to Dr. Kenny Chong, PharmD, MHI, RPh, our Director of Clinical Innovation. Dr. Chong has 15 years of experience practicing in and managing a community pharmacy. He also has a wealth of experience in education, having served as a Clinical Lecturer and Course Coordinator at the University of Toronto’s Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy. He has taught several minor ailments and self-care courses, and has also developed and reviewed CCCEP-accredited, continuing education modules. Dr. Chong is committed to developing the tools needed to advance community pharmacy practice. Get to know Dr. Chong a bit better with this mini Q & A! Q: What’s your favourite feature or benefit of MAPflow? KC: Our leadership team is heavily entrenched in pharmacy education and academia. You can be certain that MAPflow’s algorithms reflect current recommendations and follow best practices (not just the bare minimum) for providing patient care. This complete, comprehensive, and evidence-based approach to care is consistent with how pharmacists are trained in school and ensures that we are providing our patients with the care they need and deserve. Q: What’s your best advice for pharmacy professionals (or students!) regarding our expanding scope of practice? KC: Don’t forget the follow-up! There are many advantages to providing follow-up consultations, such as: 💊 Allowing an opportunity to modify the care plan if outcomes are not being met, 💊 Identifying which components of your care plan are working well and which could use improvement, and 💊 Building rapport with your patients. Providing a new service can be intimidating, but follow-up consultations can help boost your confidence by giving you feedback on your abilities and acting as a “safety net” to ensure the best outcomes for your patients. Q: What are your favourite things to do when you’re not working? KC: I like to keep active. My go-to activities include biking, swimming, and exploring new neighbourhoods with my dog. #MeetTheTeam #MAPflow #PatientCare #PharmacyPractice

Late spring IVC and Western University of Health Sciences signed an Agreement that establishes a Pre-Pharmacy Pathway for students to become pharmacists. This pathway saves students time and cost by directly transitioning to the Doctor of Pharmacy program without having to complete a bachelor’s degree.
