Ireland's greenhouse gas emissions fell by 2.2% in the first quarter of 2024, compared to the same period last year, new data from the country's Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Ireland has found. “The reduction of 2.2% in Ireland’s greenhouse gas emissions in the first quarter of 2024, when compared with the same period last year, is welcome following the largest annual reduction in emissions outside of recession reported in 2023," commented Dr Eimear Cotter, director of the office of evidence and Assessment, EPA. #emissions #greenhousegas #ireland #epa Read more: https://lnkd.in/e5ar8mkA

Ireland is projected to achieve a reduction of up to 29 percent in total greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, compared to a target of 51 percent, Achieving a reduction of 29 percent would require full implementation of a wide range of policies and plans across all sectors and for these to deliver the anticipated carbon savings. Almost all sectors are on a trajectory to exceed their national sectoral emissions ceilings for 2025 and 2030, including Agriculture, Electricity, and Transport. The Latest analysis from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Ireland states that Ireland is no closer to meeting greenhouse gas reduction targets the best that can be expected based on the current scale & speed of emission cuts is 29% reduction by 2030. AMBER's recent position paper makes recommendations which can contribute to further reductions. Read More: https://lnkd.in/guY-z2-S

GLOBAL GREENHOUSE GAS LEVY LIKELY IN 2027 The 81st meeting of the Maritime Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) wrapped up at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) last week with a greenhouse gas (GHG) levy now likely to be introduced by 2027. According to a read-out from UMAS, London-based watchers of green shipping regulation, there was positive momentum built at the meeting, with an increased number and diversity of countries supporting a GHG levy. “The MEPC has agreed on a framework for the mid-term measures including a fuel standard and an economic measure, as well as set up the necessary expert groups, laying the foundation for an agreement that will deliver on the target of net-zero by 2050,” read a statement from the World Shipping Council, liner shipping’s lobby group. “We will have a pricing mechanism,” said the IMO’s secretary-general, Arsenio Dominguez (pictured), in a meeting with journalists at the organization’s London headquarters. “Of that, I have no doubt.” Specifics of how the levy will work will be up for further discussion at MEPC 82, which meets in September. Among other key outcomes from last week’s meeting, there was approval of SOx and NOx emission control areas in the Norwegian Sea and the Canadian Arctic, both expected to come into force in 2026. A global greenhouse gas levy is anticipated to be implemented in 2027, potentially impacting the maritime industry's sustainability initiatives and operational costs. How should shipping companies prepare for this upcoming levy, and what strategies can they adopt to mitigate its effects while continuing to advance towards greener practices? https://lnkd.in/e37iudsr Via Splash 247 #GHGEmissions #Shipping #MaritimeIndustry

“Illegal HFC Smuggling Threatens Europe's Efforts” Startling news from the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA): Europe is facing a serious problem with illegal hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), a range of chemicals primarily utilized for cooling purposes in both industrial and retail settings, sneaking in from China and Turkey. European and other industrial countries are committed to reduce the use of HFC by 85% from 2012 to 2036 as part of the 2016 Kigali amendment to the Montreal Protocol. To reduce the use of HFC, authorized HFC producers and consumers are given quotas that gradually decrease overtime. These HFCs, though effective refrigerants, are potential greenhouse gasses and it is a huge issue in Europe as they are one of the leading nations that is committed to replacing the HFCs with natural refrigerants like hydrocarbons (HC) and they have been doing this since the mid - 1990s. Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) carbon dioxide emission is 1000 times more compared to natural refrigerants, their release into the atmosphere greatly contributes to climate change, that alone is a reason why the EU focuses on phasing out the use of HFCs. Despite the EU's efforts to reduce HFC usage, smuggling operations continue to bring these gasses into Europe. High demand incentivizes both legal and illegal traders, leading to roughly 20% to 30% of traded HFCs being illegal, emitting up to 30 million tons of CO2. This week, Climate lawsuits filed across continents argue governments are failing to protect citizens from climate change. They highlight both physical and psychological consequences, with one case involving Portuguese youth emphasizing violations of rights like life, privacy, and freedom from torture due to prolonged exposure to extreme heat and wildfires. Challenges include difficulty attending school, leaving homes, and sleeping properly in temperatures exceeding 40°C. Addressing the urgent climate crisis requires swift action from governments. They can enact stricter regulations on emissions from industries using HFCs and increase investment in renewable energy sources like solar and wind power. Additionally, educating individuals and businesses about climate change and actionable steps they can take, is essential, I would say. The future of our planet and people is at stake and NOw is the time to act and prioritize environmental, (including ethical, social) protection over profit. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is proposing Clean Air Act emission limits and guidelines for carbon dioxide (CO2) from fossil fuel-fired power plants. The electricity power sector generated 25% of the total U.S. greenhouse gas emissions in 2021. The EPA's new emission limits are expected to cut 617 million metric tons of CO2 through 2042. In addition to cutting emissions from CO2, the new Clean Air Act emission limits will reduce thousands of tons of harmful air pollutants such as particulate matter, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide that damage health and shorten lifespans. This Spring, the EPA expects to issue final standards to cut pollution from existing coal and new gas-fired power plants and expects to start a new stakeholder process for existing gas-fired power plants. #climateaction #climatechange #emissionsreduction #carbonmanagement #environmentalimpact #powersector
