APPRENTICES NIGHT OUT Not that we need much of a reason for a get-together, but to mark the occasion of the completion of our first cohort of apprentices who achieved their Waste Management apprenticeship - with all of them passing the final exam - we took the opportunity to have a celebratory night out. Adam Webster - Head of HR at MadiganGill remarked “It's wonderful seeing the great spirit amongst everyone, and to make our celebration even more special - we had a mini photo album created for all those involved and had a great time going through the photos and remembering many of the wonderful times we shared”. It's also fantastic, that all the apprentices will remain with us - continuing their training and development and moving into supervisory roles. Tony Ball, Managing Director for Logistics and Demolition commented on the outcome of the scheme. “We are delighted that all our apprentices have done so well and consider their success as part of our investment in the future of MadiganGIll and the construction industry”. Moving forward, we are now onto our second cohort of apprentices, so look out for more news and posts about them across our Logistic projects. From CIOB People (UK) From bricklaying apprentice to industry leader The construction skills shortage is a responsibility all industry leaders must face. Figures suggest an extra 224,900 people need to be recruited by 2027, or an average of 44,980 a year, if the sector is to meet expected demand. Training and working with apprentices is a great way to bring young people into a business, but there are also multiple schemes available to help employers with the cost of hiring and training apprentices. Offering an apprenticeship is a cost-effective way for businesses to grow their talent pool. By investing in training an apprentice, you can create a well-rounded employee with the skills you need. You will also be doing your bit for the economy, not to mention helping a young person take their first step on the career ladder.

I am a big fan of the apprenticeship scheme! It’s a win-win for business owners if you can find the right candidate ✅ Sure, you have to set aside time to train your apprentice and make sure the apprentice is doing all the things they are supposed to be doing if you want them to be successful 🏆 However, hiring an apprentice can help improve your business's profit, especially once the apprentice starts to work independently 💰 We know there’s a shortage of skilled labourers in the landscaping industry, and with this approach, you can grow your own talent 🌱 The added benefit is that they learn to do things your way 🌳 Happy days 😃 #landscapegardening #landscapebusiness #landscapebusinessowner #landscapers #landscapersofinstagram #landscaperslife #landscapers_of_instagram #sonesaccountancy #accountancy

It’s National Apprentice Week! As we reflect on 140 years of quality construction, Jerram Falkus know that apprenticeships have formed the bedrock of our company. We are passionate advocates of on the job training and recognise the vital role apprenticeships are playing in adding to the wider construction workforce. The sentiments of William J. Jerram, writing to Minister of Works Charles Key MP in 1948 seem particularly relevant today. “It is my belief that high-grade craft training should not be overlooked. In these days of austerity and utility, the present need for which is well understood – there is little or no opportunity for training lads in that type of work which could never be mechanised – stone masonry and the more advanced craftwork in trades such as brickwork, joinery, carpentry and plastering - for which we shall need well trained men in the better days that lie ahead. If, therefore, that you can see your way clear to release from time to time to the industry even a little of that which is known by operatives as class work, it will be taking the long view towards providing a fully manned and properly trained industry for the future.” Fast-forward to 2024 and we advocate for people from all walks of life to join the industry and are delighted to see and be part of more women joining the sector. Apprenticeships provide vital on-the-job training for much of the construction workforce and we at Jerram Falkus Construction are proud to continue to support them either directly or through our supply chain. To cap off National Apprenticeship Week, we're spotlighting Tara Martin, a former apprentice who has risen through the ranks to become our Procurement Manager. This is what Tara had to say: "I first joined Beal 23 years ago as an apprentice doing general administration work. At that time, our office was on Towerhouse Lane off Hedon Road in east Hull and Beal was only selling around 60 homes a year. I think the whole office team was about 11 people! "When I left school, I signed up to a recruitment agency who got me the interview with Beal. Once I started working at Beal, I was doing an NVQ in Customer Service and Business Management. I did that for three years and then moved into the technical side of the business. "Coming into a business aged 16 definitely brought me along quickly. I had to be professional, and, with some of my work being front-of-house dealing with customers, my communication skills developed too. "My advice to young people today would be to consider an apprenticeship if you think it’s right for you. It gives you work experience alongside education at an early stage in your career, and gives you a head start on a lot of people who go through university or further education. "Today I’m Beal’s Procurement Manager, with a focus on new product innovation. Energy efficiency forms a big part of that, looking at the way our homes are heated and preparing for the Future Homes Standard which comes in next year. "We’re definitely seeing buyers are so much more aware of the environmental impact of their home. They want products which are made from recycled or sustainable materials and they’re thinking more about heat pumps instead of gas boilers." #NAW2024 #SkillsForLife

Can you meet public work apprenticeship bid specifications? One of the biggest challenges that prevents open-shop contractors from moving into doing public works jobs is the apprenticeship requirements attached to these bids. It is costly and involved to provide approved apprentice programs for your company so many contractors never bother. Does this sound like you? The Alliance offers open-shop (non-union) building and heavy construction contractors a cost-effective opportunity to meet the bid specs to “have apprenticeship agreements” and participate in DOL registered apprentice training in the laborer, carpentry, operating engineer, ironworker and cement finisher/mason trades - all under one agreement! If you're considering bidding on public works projects but aren't sure of what is needed to meet the apprenticeship agreements, call us. We can help! #skilledtrades #construction #constructionindustry #apprenticeships #governmentbids #contractors
