Gen Z is the lonliest generation the world has seen. But maybe it’s time to turn the villain (social media & screen time) into the hero by utilizing social as a catalyst for change. As argued in this great article by The Drum “people trust (some) brands more than governments”. This presents a great opportunity for brands to do good & improve their social brand value in the process. https://lnkd.in/dddncciE

New Year, New Faces… PLEASE! Our Head of Culture and Community Marketing Dominique Gardiner says: 2024 is in full swing. We’re back outside, the event invites are popping up and the major calendar moments are creeping in, such as International Women's Day, World Book Day, Mental Health Awareness Week, Eid etc. Of course brands will celebrate these moments, hopefully in an authentic way, working with well known talent, influencers and content creators who we all know, and is it a stretch to say, love? Ok too far, people who we like and who’s hustle we respect. But we know we’re not the only ones experiencing ‘Same Ol Fatigue’. We’ve been talking about Social Media VIPs and personalities in the Coldr office and quite frankly we’re bored of the same ol predictable faces! No disrespect to the talent and social media VIPs who are doing their thing and remain booked and busy, get your money up! But we need some newness, different stories and experiences, everything looks the same. Here are four ways to spice up your approach: 🧊 Celebrate the underdog 🧊 Champion underestimated communities 🧊 Collaborate with those making a difference and power moves 🧊 Spotlight the people/team behind the talent If you have ‘Same Ol Fatigue’ too and need a fresh perspective but don’t know where to start, contact us. We can support you with a talent and influencer strategy that ticks your boxes (we know it's a numbers game) and invites new communities to engage with your brand without alienating your base. "As influencers, we can ensure older people are seen in the right ways. But it’s not just about visibility. It’s about changing the mindset. Thinking more about stage than age. This will benefit us, the brands we market and, in the long run, it will make everyone healthier and happier if we’re not chasing the illusion of youth." With consumer media habits less about age and more about life stage, Madeleine Morris, Creative Director at Cravens, asks why the advertising, marketing, and research industries are so focused on age and argues that retaining more older people in our agencies can change perceptions by debunking stereotypes in our ads: https://ow.ly/hAOH50QSthK

We, like senior centers, can be influencers for health and well-being, notes BetterAge Chief Immersion Officer, Ron Kaiser, Ph.D.: Now that several thousand older adults have taken our health and well-being assessment through our partnership with senior centers, I am happy to report some relevant data as well as invite you to share information and thoughts that can be helpful to us. Since my role includes being in charge of the empathy strategy that permeates all that BetterAge does, I was interested in why people take the 7-10 minutes to complete the assessment – so we started asking them. Obviously, we hope that a prominent reason is because they are seeking guidance to improve their health and well-being. While that is a strong reason, the prevailing reason that individuals have taken the assessment so far is because their senior center encouraged them to do so. Sure, part of that is by design, but it’s still very encouraging because it suggests that if an organization has a rapport with its membership, it can be a great influence in health promotion and presumably other well-being-related activities. Sometimes we may wonder how much influence we may have over promoting healthy behavior change, and our work suggests that the influence could be considerable. The challenge for us all is to determine how we can become better influencers of older adults, and then to use our influence in a positive and empathic manner. #betterage #agetech #olderadultwellbeing

The more I scroll, the less I click. Lately, I've been thinking a lot about how we consume content on social media. I’ve noticed a trend that worries me—scrolling without stopping. We’re all guilty of it. I see something beautiful or meaningful and just keep going. I take for granted the amazing content that artists, writers, and creators put out there. For those of us in creative industries or nonprofit sectors, this trend is disheartening to say the least. With tight budgets and big dreams, social media becomes a lifeline—a way to reach people, make connections, and bring about change. But if our hard work isn’t seen or valued, what does that mean for the future of human creativity and social movements? Of course, for the platform owners scrolling equals advertising revenue. The more ads you look at, the happier they will be. This follows the gig economy trend where those who do the work sadly don’t get the full benefit of the value generated from their labour. In real life, I choose small businesses, local trades, community organisations wherever I can. The same values should guide my social media behaviours. I’m going to work on doing a better job here from now on. What might happen if this trend continues? Will I, will we, lose touch with the value of people power and creativity in our lives? For many, especially those working with limited resources, social media is a vital platform to make an impact, share stories, and inspire change. For some social media pays the bills, or perhaps more correctly, does not pay the bills. If we don’t pause to engage, share, or simply appreciate, we risk eroding the very foundation that these creatives and nonprofits rely on, we risk deepening the gap between those who have and those who do not. I’m making an effort to change my habits. Not just for my well-being, but to support the people who make our feeds a more interesting, thoughtful, and inspiring place to be. I believe we all need to stop and smell the virtual roses once in a while. How about you? Do you find ways to make your time online more meaningful? I’d love to hear any tips or tricks for mindful consumption. Diversity in social media is crucial as it ensures a representation of varied perspectives, experiences, and voices. It fosters inclusivity, broadens cultural understanding, and promotes a more tolerant and open-minded online community. By embracing diversity, social media platforms become powerful tools for connecting people from different backgrounds and creating a richer, more vibrant online environment.
