The reality is a lot of designers won't have the luxury of being able to follow design processes to the absolute T when working in environments where they have to ship fast. This doesn't mean they're not capable of doing so. Be open minded to this when hiring, otherwise you'll lose out on some top creative talent.

To those seeking work: Please don’t be put off roles based on X+ years of experience needed Years ≠ expertise Years of experience is often a (lazy) shorthand for ‘level of experience facing certain challenges’. It's not necessarily a requirement of time. You don't necessarily actually need say 5+ years of experience to apply What you need is to have experienced and successfully worked through the types of challenges a designer might come across in the space of working for 5+ years. Some may do it in 3 years. Others might not in 7 years. Experiences and ability to deliver and communicate are far more important than ‘years served’! We need to normalise that #Design #Hiring #Talent

Time to think differently… Lots of designers want to work for companies that are already ‘good’ at design You know - the ones that look super sexy on your CV Each to their own But I honestly think that the most interesting companies for Designers are the ones that are under the radar. The ones that aren’t know for being ‘good’ for design. These are the companies where designers really have the opportunity to shape and leave a mark. To be part of something bigger. Sure the risk might be higher ... but so is the reward. You will likely also have less competition 👀 Where do you sit? #Design #Designers #Hiring

Why is it so hard to hire a world-class Design Director in LA who's exceptional at building iconic brands? It's not what you may expect... Everyone wants to hire them. But not everyone can. Branding agencies want them. Advertising agencies want them. And in-house teams want them. The problem is... Which one of the above is going to future-proof my career as a design leader? I think most people presume in-house. The biggest companies in the world can offer some really big paycheques. But I think they might be underestimating the power of design agencies... Particularly design agencies that have always focussed on what they are exceptional at. Building unforgettable brands that pave the future of great design through experimentation, exploration and boundless creativity that the rest of us will actually see. Leading a team to create the best design work with global names and brands of the future, where every day is different and every day you're creating work that will make an impact on the world. At UNKNOWN I'm lucky enough to be working with a design agency that is truly at the very top of their game, and only getting better. Design Director LA BASED (Hybrid) sally@weareunknown.io

There's 100's of talented designers available. Yet, companies are struggling to hire designers. Thoughts as to why: - Companies want "end-to-end" product designers because they need more bang for their buck. That's the reality of the economic environment we're in, budgets are being squeezed. - Hands-off managers who don't want or can't execute IC work to a high level. In my world of working with VCs, these people will not work at early-stage companies. You need to be doing the work and leading. - Non-design hiring managers can't determine which designer will be a long-term fit. i.e. you will need a different type of designer at seed stage to series B. The founding designer role IMO is the toughest role to get right. - The return of "hybrid". London is a vacuum for top designers who want to be in the office 2-3 days a week. What are you seeing? P.S. the "office hours" was great on Monday, great to see many familiar faces. Let's stick together. I'll be running every Monday 3-4pm GMT, for the community. Link in comments.
