We're on the other side of Labour Day and (unsurprisingly) the market is picking up (but not taking off). Here's what were seeing in associate recruitment this month: - Firms remain conservative with hiring decisions. The focus is on filling immediate gaps with smaller and/or specialty groups, like competition and IP. - Litigation continues to see more demand than corporate. Litigators with a focus on construction disputes have some interesting options right now. - We saw 8 lateral moves for corporate/M&A associates across national firms over the summer, which was more than we've seen all year. It'll be interesting to see if this trend continues into Q4 when deal flow often picks up. - Partnership decisions remain top of mind for senior associates. With some firms deferring partnership eligibility, we're seeing top talent consider options. Even if you're not up for partner this year, these deferrals can create bottle-necks, so think critically about how this impacts your future at the firm. Have questions? I can attest that the most elite U.S. corporate firms are hiring associates from the top 15 Canadian firms. I have talked with several of these associates over the past four months. The keys are a robust deal sheet with your experience ( be specific on your role), knowing in detail what those firms do and strong interview skills. It helps if you know someone who can introduce you to a Canadian partner or a partner with Canadian clients. Obviously, this is a very personal decision with no right or wrong answer in most cases. It does demonstrate the quality of our associates and that you don’t need to be from the “ seven sisters”. As in all things, it is great to have options.

Having a fantastic day today! It's days like these that remind me why I do recruitment. The question "Why do you do recruitment❓" can be tough to answer when you're constantly dealing with people - individuals who are ever-changing and sometimes challenging. It's never a straightforward journey. Nevertheless, today I had some amazing conversations where I have been proud to highlight our Core Values and what Higgs LLP truly represents. It dawned on me how refreshing it is to genuinely believe in what you communicate, provide real-life examples of our values in action daily, and wholeheartedly stand by everything shared with candidates. It's moments like this that make it all worthwhile. Ask any young law firm associate why they chose their firm, and the answer is likely to be some variation of “It was the people.” With this in mind, Akin asked us to create a people-focused recruiting video that would let its lawyers tell the firm’s story through their own experiences. We worked closely with the recruiting team to identify key messages, create interview questions, and provide art and editorial direction.
