If sport brings boundless joy, why should girls not get the chance to play? Think of all the reasons women are advised to stay away from sports, from any form of play, and rethink about them. Why not? A 2022 survey by Women in Sports reported that more than 1 million teenage girls, 43%, who once considered themselves sporty dropped out of a sport after primary school. At Maitrayana, we believe in the power of sport to transform lives, challenge the status quo, open the door to opportunities, and the claiming of one's agency. The Young People's Initiative (YPI) has empowered thousands of girls and young women through sports and we want to make sport accessible for all women. We have some exciting plans to make it happen! Happy National Girls & Women in Sports Day®, powered by Women's Sports Foundation! Join us in celebrating all of the girls and women who play, coach or work in sports! Did you know that girls’ sports participation is on the rise? According to the Sports and Fitness Industry Association (SFIA), girls’ youth sports participation rate was 35 percent among ages 6-17 in 2022, the highest participation rate for girls since 2013! However, most youth sports coaches continue to be men, even for girls’ leagues. In 2022, only 26 percent of youth sports head coaches were women, up slightly from 24 percent in 2019, according to data from SFIA. This level of representation is far below what’s needed to accurately reflect and balance the percentage of girls who participate in youth sports. As someone who's delved quite deeply into sports over the past year, particularly running and hitting the gym, I've experienced firsthand the transformative power it holds over mental and physical well-being. It's not just about logging kilometers or lifting weights; it's about the great impact it has on shaping our lives, especially for young girls. In a recent report by the Women's Sports Foundation, the significance of sports participation for girls is illuminated through compelling data. The report highlights that "girls who play sports have higher levels of confidence, self-esteem, and leadership" (Women's Sports Foundation, 2024, p. 3). It resonates deeply with my own journey and reaffirms the importance of integrating sports into the lives of young girls and women everywhere. Sport isn't just about physical health—it's a catalyst for building confidence, resilience, and leadership skills. Through my own experiences, I've witnessed how hitting the pavement or stepping into the gym can instill a sense of empowerment. The report's findings underscore the need for equitable access to sports opportunities for girls from all walks of life. It's about breaking down barriers and ensuring that every girl, regardless of background, has the chance to experience the life-changing benefits of sports participation. In integrating sports into our lives, we not only improve our physical health but also cultivate resilience, confidence, and a sense of belonging. Let's harness the power of sports to empower the next generation of girls and create a more equitable and inclusive world for all. Have you ever wondered why 43% of girls quit sports by the age of 13? This alarming statistic raises important questions about how we can better support young female athletes. Did you know that football offers numerous health benefits for girls, including improved cardiovascular fitness, increased muscle strength, and enhanced mental health through teamwork and discipline? Plus, here’s a fun trivia fact: The first Women’s World Cup was held in 1991, paving the way for countless female athletes to shine on the global stage. How can we encourage more girls to continue playing sports like football and reap these incredible benefits? Here are some solutions to encourage more girls to continue playing sports like football: 1. Create a Supportive Environment: - Parental Involvement: Educate parents on the importance of sports in their daughters' lives and encourage them to be supportive. - Mentorship Programs: Connect young girls with female role models in sports who can provide guidance and inspiration. 2. Improve Access to Facilities and Resources: - Community Programs: Develop community-based programs that provide free or low-cost access to sports facilities and equipment. - School Support: Advocate for schools to offer more sports programs specifically for girls, ensuring they have equal opportunities to participate. 3. Enhance Coaching and Training: - Female Coaches: Recruit and train more female coaches who can serve as role models and provide a relatable figure for young girls. - Coach Education: Offer training for coaches on how to create a positive and inclusive environment that addresses the specific needs of young female athletes. 4. Promote the Benefits of Sports Participation: - Health Education: Educate girls and their families about the physical, mental, and social benefits of participating in sports like football. - Success Stories: Share stories of successful female athletes who started young and highlight their journeys and achievements. 5. Address Social and Cultural Barriers: - Tackle Stereotypes: Challenge and change stereotypes about girls and sports through media campaigns and educational programs. - Inclusivity Initiatives: Ensure sports programs are inclusive and welcoming to girls of all backgrounds and abilities. 6. Make Football Fun and Engaging: Variety of Activities**: Incorporate a variety of activities and games to keep football training sessions fun and engaging. 7. Social Events: Organize social events and tournaments that create a sense of community and belonging among young female players. #innovation #football #purpose #inside3stripes #WomenInSports #GirlsInSports #InspiringWomenAthletes #TrailblazingSportswomen #FemaleAthleteInspiration #SportsHeroines #BreakingBarriers #PuneFootball #MumbaiFootball #DelhiFootball #TrendingFootball #FootballInIndia #FootballCityPune #FootballCityMumbai #FootballCityDelhi #IndianFootballScene #FootballCultureIndia

Supporting #women and #girls in sports is not just a matter of fairness, but a catalyst for #positive change. In addition to promoting #physical and #mental wellbeing, #Sport fosters a sense of #accomplishment, self-belief, and the ability to overcome challenges. This #confidence spills over into all aspects of life, empowering women to pursue their #goals and dreams. Sports also teach valuable #teamwork skills, #strategic thinking, and the ability to lead by example. These #skills translate seamlessly into #academic and #professional success. While #strides have been made towards supporting #women in sports, significant barriers still #exist. This includes the funding disparity, as women’s #sports often receive significantly less funding than men’s, limiting resources for #training, equipment, and facilities. It also includes the lack of #media coverage, as the vast majority of sports #media attention goes to men’s sports, leaving women #athletes and their achievements under-recognized. Moreover, societal biases may discourage girls from participating in #sports, hindering their athletic #development. There are ways to overcome these #barriers and support women and girls in sports. This includes attending women’s sporting #events, demanding #equal media coverage and #funding for women’s sports, and encouraging your #local schools and organizations to provide equal opportunities for girls. When women are empowered to compete and excel, everyone benefits. They become role models, #inspire change, and pave the way for the next #generation of female #athletes. Let’s #work together to break down barriers, and create a world where women’s sports thrive. #Soccer #SheDefends #SheManurers #SheAttacks #SheKicks #SheScores #SheWins

Something totally different, but worthy: Girl Power: The Impact of Professional Women’s Sport http://spr.ly/6048eo8o6 As female professional sports continue to grow, a positive economic benefit should be seen, even if the precise impact is very small and clouded by shifting spending patterns. Regardless of any direct economic impact, more choice is always good for consumers, and more opportunity for elite female athletes is enthusiastically welcomed. Finally, if successful professional female sports can continue to work to maximize youth participation among girls, spurring all the associated benefits, we would consider that a big win.

🌟 Leader Spotlight 🌟 Girl Up USA Leader & International #MartialArts Champion Tahirah received a #GirlUp Sports for a Purpose Scholarship last year, using the funding to highlight the experiences of female athletes on her college campus and the intersections between #Sports, #GenderEquity, and #MentalHealth. "My participation in sports has positively impacted my overall physical, mental, and emotional health. From being a strong reliever of stress, to the friends I’ve met along my journey, to the places visited, sports has provided balance within my life. I hope to show young girls that they never have to give up on their sports dream. Despite the circumstances and what others might say—whether it’s facing stereotypes and gender norms, balancing academics, or recovering from an injury—with perseverance and grit, there is always a way to continue doing what you love." "Women in Sport’s research found complex barrier and deep-rooted negative attitudes are affecting girls’ enjoyment of sport. Body image and puberty are also significant factors. 78% say they avoid sport when they have their period while 73% don’t like others watching them take part in activity." Girls drop out of sports at a rate 2-3 times higher than boys. We're committed to changing this narrative. We believe every girl deserves the opportunity to experience the transformative power of sports. The more we know about why girls leave sport, the more we can help to encourage them to stay.
