Qatari and UAE leaders have met several times after the conclusion of the embargo in 2021, including in Beijing in February 2020, Abu Dhabi in January 2023, and Doha in March 2023. These discussions have covered a wide range of mutual interests, including trade, security, and regional cooperation. The Thursday meeting also coincided with the reopening of the Qatari embassy in Abu Dhabi and the Emirati embassy in Doha, both of which had been closed since 2017. This is a significant step towards resuming full diplomatic relations between the two countries. The two presidents also spoke on recent developments in the occupied Palestinian territories, as well as methods to improve relief and humanitarian work, protect people, and reduce escalation in order to achieve regional stability and security. I hope that this conference will result in additional positive outcomes for Qatar and the UAE, as well as the rest of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the Arab world, because communication and cooperation are the most effective approaches to overcome disagreements and achieve mutual goals.

The Doha meeting and the UN-led effort, in general, must present the Taleban with a clear choice: engage in a national dialogue with fellow Afghans for "inclusive constitution-making," as suggested by the Independent Assessment, or face further isolation. The UN Secretary-General, authorized by the SCR 2721, should appoint the Special Envoy for Afghanistan who should actively engage with non-or-anti-Taleban constituencies. The minimalist approach to engagement with the Taleban for lifting some of the restrictions on women does not work. #Afghanistan

Last decade, especially since the Arab Spring of 2010, has been quite momentous for the #Saudi domestic, foreign and security policies. This has been further accentuated in the last five years and is greatly marked by tremendous pragmatism and realism so well-endowed in the “Vision 2030’ launched by Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman(MBS). Socio-economic reforms including the much-commented freedom for women from driving to going to Haj without an accompanying relative or for that matter even doing away with compulsory #Hijab or Abaya and disbanding the much feared ‘Mutawa’- the morality police are indeed laudable and will have far reaching impact on Saudi Arabia’s quest for economic growth and development of the Kingdom.
