🤷♀️ 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐭 𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐛𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠. In German universities, technology and knowledge transfer, positioned as the third pillar alongside education and research, frequently lacks prioritization. My colleagues Dr. Marita Mehlstäubl, Dadhichi Paretkar, and I had the honor of giving a workshop on the topic of innovation scouting at the conference "moonshots & moneten" at garage33 last week. During this interactive workshop, the focus was on 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 working in the field of technology transfer, innovation scouting, start-up support, and partner management. In this concise one-hour workshop, we concentrated on these two questions: 1️⃣ What were your 3 biggest challenges in the field of innovation scouting and how did you overcome them? 2️⃣ If you could start innovation scouting from scratch again, what would you do differently / the same? Lastly, to match the theme of the conference, we concluded the workshop with the "𝐌𝐨𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐭 𝐖𝐢𝐬𝐡": 🌕 🚀 "𝐈𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐭𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐲 𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐭 𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬, 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐢𝐭 𝐛𝐞?" We collected all inputs on post-its and will structure the results in the next few days. We are happy to share our learnings. Title: The Power of Reinvention: A Case for Not Looking Back In the world of innovation, there’s a familiar saying: “Don’t reinvent the wheel.” But what if the act of reinvention itself is a pathway to deeper learning and creativity? I argue that not only is it acceptable to occasionally ‘reinvent the wheel,’ but it can also be a crucial part of the innovation process. 1. Unleashing Creativity: When we choose not to look up whether something already exists, we free our minds from the constraints of what’s been done. This approach allows us to explore the full extent of our imagination, combining and recombining ideas in novel ways. 2. Deep Learning Through Doing: Reinventing something provides a profound understanding of its mechanics and potential for improvement. By working through the problems and solutions ourselves, we gain insights that we might never achieve by simply following in others’ footsteps. 3. The Intersection of Imagination: Often, true innovation happens at the crossroads of existing ideas. By delving deeply into our imagination and bringing together various concepts, we might stumble upon unique combinations that lead to groundbreaking innovations. In conclusion, while it’s essential to be aware of existing inventions, there’s undeniable value in sometimes choosing not to look them up. One of my favourite books is “Conversation: how to talk can change our lives“ by Theodore Zeldin. This little book from the Oxford academic, makes the case for how transformational conversation can be. Martin Charter FRSA and I launched our Createch sustainability tool in September 2023 (https://buff.ly/3PPy6Xp), and since then over 270 people have used it in more than 20 countries. There’s the beginning of a conversation there with founders, CEOs and CTOs, and we want to run with that. So this is a little bit of a heads up. Next week we will be inviting people to join us for a series of peer-to-peer conversations via Zoom starting on Wednesday, April 17, and finishing on Friday, April 19. We call these 30 minute discussions. Navigating Sustainability Together. There will be two sessions per day to make sure that we cover the globe. Yes, we’re going global! How will they work? A brief introduction and maybe a slide or two from me to get the conversation started, and then it’s open to all. Each session will run under The Chatham House Rule, and we won’t be recording them, so this is a safe space to bring problems out into the open and get your peers to help you solve them. We’ve picked three topics to start with. Generative AI, business models, and winning R&D grants. All of these, of course, through the lens of sustainability, creativity and technology, i.e. Createch.
