On average, Black men earn $0.87 for every $1.00 their White counterparts make, and for Black women, it drops to $0.63. Earnings signify more than just a paycheck—they embody opportunities for growth and empowerment. To honour Black History Month, we celebrate the vibrant heritage, legacies, and invaluable contributions of Black leaders that shape Canada’s cultural tapestry. It's a time not only for reflection but also for action against systemic racism that persists in our society. Elevating Black Excellence at Rice Business Karim Fotso: Professional Class of 2024 What does Black excellence mean to you personally? Black excellence, to me, is a multifaceted concept deeply rooted in my African upbringing. It embodies the will and desire to succeed against all odds, fostering an environment where love, support, and authenticity thrive. It’s the resilience to always give our best to break through barriers and change a system that has led to so many wasted talents. It’s also about not forgetting where we come from by giving back to the people and communities that have shaped us. Fostering unity across races and cultures, leaving no one behind in our collective pursuit of greatness. How have your unique experiences shaped your pursuit of excellence? Leaving home at a young age to come to America showed me the importance of having a strong support system to face unknown and challenging environments. It made me realize the tremendous role that family and friends play in my success. Being a former professional athlete ingrained in me discipline, resilience, and a mindset of continual improvement. It taught me the importance of never taking success for granted, and always striving to learn and enhance oneself. As a family man, I've embraced a profound sense of purpose, driven to lead by example. These elements collectively led me to pursue an MBA at Rice, to obtain the tools to make a bigger impact in the world. In what ways do you see yourself contributing to a more diverse and inclusive future? I am committed to genuinely sharing my skills and resources and acting as a catalyst for positive change in my community and beyond. I will promote Diversity conferences such as NBMBAA, for their valuable professional and personal development opportunities. Did you know that one-third of Black professionals believe they have missed out on career opportunities due to a lack of mentorship? 👀 👉🏾 The Significance of Mentorship Mentorship stands as a proven and valuable tool in assisting professionals in achieving success at various stages of their personal and professional journeys. Mentorship plays a pivotal role in granting Black employees entry into circles that might otherwise be challenging to access due to racial biases. Through mentorship, mentors can provide mentees with a competitive edge by introducing them to valuable networks. This exposure enables Black professionals to identify potential collaborators, access informative sources, and acquire skills and knowledge that may have otherwise remained out of reach. By expanding their networks, they can discover broader career opportunities. The same survey uncovered additional insights: 👉🏾 Almost half (45%) of the surveyed Black professionals are contemplating leaving their workplaces due to a lack of opportunities for promotional advancement, coupled with insufficient recognition for their contributions (32%). "A pivotal moment in my career occurred several years ago when I was given the opportunity to lead a high-stakes project for a major client. This experience not only shaped my journey in work but also transformed my perspective on challenges and personal growth. It taught me the importance of embracing challenges, effective leadership, and resilience. This experience continues to serve as a reminder of the power of perseverance and the potential for growth that lies within each of us." What advice would you give to someone who aspires to follow a similar path in their career, and what lessons have you learned that you would like to pass on? "To those aspiring to follow a similar path, my advice is to be consistent. Develop your processes, execute tasks consistently, and never give up. Focus on finding solutions, believe in yourself, and let internal factors drive you more than external ones. Stay true to yourself, regardless of how others treat you. What's meant for you will come to you. Embrace challenges, effective leadership, and resilience; view setbacks as opportunities for growth." Could you share a cherished memory or tradition from your personal history or family that has influenced who you are today? "One family tradition that significantly influenced who I am today is our 'Gratitude Dinner.' This monthly gathering instilled in me a deep appreciation for blessings and empathy towards others. It taught me the importance of gratitude, strengthened family bonds, and inspired me to give back. This tradition continues to guide me on my journey, reminding me of the values of gratitude, family, and making a positive impact in the world."

As we continue celebration Black History Month and highlight the achievements of black researchers and innovators in National Science Foundation (NSF) I-Corps and in the National Innovation Network, please join us today to celebrate Emmanuel Etsu. Emmanuel Eshemokhai's entrepreneurial spirit sprouted early. Back in Nigeria, he founded Leaf Force Construction, a venture built on the belief that "scarcity has no place in construction." Leaf Force skillfully sourced resources and funds and streamlined the allocation and transportation of building materials in response to the need to make everyone's lives easier. That first taste of innovation left Etsu hungry for more. Now, as a Supply Chain Management student at the prestigious University of Maryland - Robert H. Smith School of Business, Etsu is honing his skills, fueling his vision, and leading his passion. Participating in the Mid Atlantic I-Corps Hub of I-Corps at the University of Maryland was a game-changer. Those two venture internship rounds were a boot camp for his ideas, pushing him to test, tweak, and validate solutions in the real world. Etsu envisions a future where all producers, resource custodians, and the backbone of communities have the power to reach broader markets and unlock their full potential. His vision is to build bridges, not walls, in the supply chain. He wants to create intelligent systems that connect local producers with the resources they need, from transportation and logistics to marketing, analytics, and customer collaboration. “I own my expertise, my experience, and my voice,” said Etsu. “I'm unafraid to challenge the status quo or break down outdated systems. My confidence isn't arrogance; it's the unshakeable belief in my ability to make a difference. And while I strive for excellence, I know the journey is just as important as the destination. Laughter, friendship, and mindful moments are the secret ingredients to my success. I'm not just a student. I'm a young black innovator in the I-Corps program and I'm prepared to make a big difference. I'm not just a supply chain whiz; I'm a bridge builder.
