Often it is only when ships are berthed next to each other that you can see the difference in size. Here, in Ushuaia, from left to right: Silver Nova, Seabourn Venture and Expedition. With only 728 passengers, Silver Nova is not even considered a big ship. Imagine the Icon of the Seas next to it, with 10 times the maximum capacity of guests.

I have a print on the wall of a burning ship. ⛵ Its one of my favorite stories and one many get wrong. "Burn the boats" -> "Go All In" Im all for it. All in or all out. Nothing great was accomplished because someone "kinda tried". But what is missed in the legend of Hernán Cortés burning his ship is WHEN he burned those ships. Hernán Cortés left Spain in 1519 with a full crew, 11 ships and stocked food supplies and journeyed across the Atlantic. He didn't burn the boats in the harbor of Spain. He didn't burn the ships in the middle of the Atlantic crossing. Only when he reached the Americas did he "burn the boats" and create a do or die outcome for the team and mission. Take action today. Start with what you have. Just remember, the 1st step doesnt need to be to burn the boats. Be smart. Build your crew, finding the right ship and navigate the initial voyage. And when you find yourself on the shores of the Americas and fortunes ahead, then burn the boats. 🔥

One of the 7 bridges of Porto. This one is the last before the Atlantic Ocean, and at the angle I’m at the bridge meets the horizon.

MARITIME SHIPPING. Getting together with insiders of maritime shipping this week was a delightful experience. The get-together was marvelously hosted at one of Amsterdam's very oldest maritime trading houses. Among a select group of individuals including shipyard owners, shipbuilders, maritime brokers, and those, like myself, who are simply enamored with maritime affairs, we looked back on the progress made and the progress that lies ahead in the future in terms of maritime shipping. Fond memories of my childhood flooded back, with miniature models of real ships adorning our home—a subtle nod to those who share a similar nostalgia (if you know, you know 😉). Maritime shipping continues to be a linchpin in global trade, with ships facilitating the transport of approximately 80-90% of the world's goods. Reflecting on history, we're reminded of the pivotal role maritime trade played, particularly in the era of free trade with the Americas, in terms of consumer goods and luxury items. Personally, I hold a particular fondness for the 18th-century frigate—a nimble and sturdy three-masted vessel capable of weathering even the harshest seas. The thought of such ships crossing the Atlantic, a journey that typically took about twenty days, fills, at least myself, with awe! #MaritimeShipping #Shipping #Naval #Amsterdam #History #Trading
