Data has driven SALT’s growth from the beginning 📊
We started with surveys. As we completed surveys with people experiencing homelessness it gave us clear directions.
Before getting our first shower trailer, we found out half of the people we served were actively looking for work but didn’t have regular access to a shower. Some looking for work hadn’t showered in three months.
Your support makes a difference! With shelters full, and housing programs full, our guests have no choice but to try to find a job while living outside. A shower not only meets a basic need but it gives them a fighting chance at finding a job. In turn it gives them greater hope, and a greater chance, at moving into housing!

I have always been drawn towards a service oriented career path, which lead me to a 17 year career as a frontline firefighter.
I have been investing in property for over 20 years and throughout that time, it has been my opinion that within the sector we have the skills, enterprise and motivation to work towards providing housing solutions for those who need them the most.
I believe that together we can end homelessness in this country.

The HomeNow campaign is coming to life at such an incredible time with all that is housing and homelessness in Queensland. From encouraging talent into frontline work supporting people experiencing homelessness, to administrative and policy development roles in social and affordable housing, and so much more we need good people who are committed to doing good work. Is that you? 👋🏼
During this NAIDOC Week, I am celebrating Queensland’s #OurPlace Roadmap, and Housing and Homelessness Action Plan with a shared vision that every First Nations person in Queensland has a safe and secure place to call home that meets personal, location and cultural needs.
For First Nations peoples, there was no concept of 'homelessness' before colonisation. Everyone had a place to call home. Home was with kin, on Country, practising culture. But currently, First Nations peoples in Queensland are experiencing a housing gap. The underlying causes are complex and may include racism and historical exclusion from education and employment, lack of understanding of family and kinship structures and mainstream housing and service industry responses that lack cultural safety. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Queensland are:
💡Six times more likely to experience homelessness than other Queenslanders.
💡More than 10 times more likely to live in social housing than other Queenslanders.
💡Twice as likely to live in severely crowded homes than other Queenslanders.
💡Only half as likely to own their own homes as other Queenslanders.
💡Five times more likely to experience financial stress than other Australians.

Meet the SALT Storage Bus! 🚌
For people experiencing homelessness, not having a place to store your belongings can be a huge barrier to moving forward. When going to job interviews, medical appointments, seeing a case manager etc., many people have to try to hide their belongings and hope they don’t get stolen. Many times their belongings do go missing and they have to start over again 😔
That’s why SALT offers storage services. We will be expanding our storage services to Bithlo. People in encampments and sleeping outside could store belongings for a certain period of time while they take important steps toward ending their homelessness. (Coming at a later phase in our expansion! Hoping to get this service fully operational soon before the end of the year 😌)

If you want an example of Age-Friendly, look no further than what a group of folks in Duluth are doing to help neighbors. All while embracing the spirit of “Minnesota Nice.” This Age-Friendly effort encourage residents of Duluth help keep sidewalks clear of snow and ice for neighbors.
The initiative, "Be MinneSNOWta NICE" was created by the BMN Group, a collective of passionate community members in Duluth who actively work to ensure that sidewalks remain accessible throughout the year.
While the City of Duluth manages snow clearance adjacent to city property, effective sidewalk snow removal throughout the city requires collaboration from everyone in the community. However, not everyone can clear snow from their sidewalk.
The BMN Group supports and empowers a social network of neighbors fostering a collaborative spirit of “Minnesota Nice” by helping each other clear sidewalks and walkways to maintain mobility choices and accessibility in all seasons.

At council on Wednesday, I challenged a report on our homelessness and refugee/asylum seekers policy. It is a fact that over the past five years our shelter system has been put under tremendous strain with COVID and our Federal immigration policy exacerbating the challenge. But the solution is not to perpetuate communal shelters across the city, especially non-permanent 'sprung shelters'. Adding communal shelters does not address the root cause and to quote Alliance to End Homelessness Ottawa, 'it is like managing a flood with a bucket instead of turning off the tap'. This is Ottawa, a winter city and the tens of millions it will cost to invest in tent-like structures would be better spent on factory-built, mass-timber, modular housing. These structures are put together like lego in a factory and then flat bedded to site for construction in weeks. A four-story women's shelter in Waterloo was put up in less than a year... Veterans' House Ottawa greatly enhances the transition out of communal shelters for our former military living rough. Housing first, especially for our most vulnerable.
The second reason that I was dissatisfied with this report was the timeline. To define our situation as a crisis and then propose a solution that will not be implemented for more than a year is, simply put, unacceptable. If there is an urgent shortage and the current physical distancing centres either need reinforcing or rotating, then lets implement something non-permanent immediately! Put a sprung shelter on an existing parking lot/large open space this fall. Rotate the off-line recreation centres for winter physical distancing use. And all the while, the city needs to immediately make plans to use currently zoned parcels of city land to construct factory built, modular, mass-timber housing that can then be ready for use for the newcomer welcome centres in winter 2025. This is achievable. This is dignified. This is geography neutral. This is the right thing for us to do and I will continue working towards this.
