𝗜𝗻𝗗𝗘𝗣𝗧𝗛’𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝘆 𝗜𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗲 𝗶𝘀 💥 We have some amazing new stories for you this month that we’re kicking off with a big dollop of diving culture. The @thedivepoet is in the house! This issue of InDEPTH offers a trio of feature stories focused on gasses and physiology. Rachel Lance introduces us to the hyperbaric docs who figured out rebreather diving physiology—breath oxygen at what depth!?%#!— in order to win WWII! Be ready for a dive geek page-turner! Next, InDEPTH reporter Ashley Stewart takes us for a dive into CO2 monitoring in the search for the so-called ‘Holy Grail,’ that is, End-tidal CO2 monitoring. Instructor Benjamin G Hadfield V ★ is ready to provide you with an altitude adjustment—everything you need to know or consider if you're gonna meet up with Karen van de Over for a high dive at Boesmansgat or maybe Lake Titicaca. Oxygen does not get you high. But Hadfield will! History, anyone? A plethora of fatalities plagued early tech divers. In response, the community rallied to create Blueprint for Survival 2.0, which represents a consensus standard of “best practices” originally compiled in 1993 by Capt. Billy Deans and yours truly, with the goal of improving diving safety. We think you’ll find it intriguing to reexamine what were considered safe practices. We were not too far off! On the exploration front, Italian explorer Andrea Murdock Alpini reports on the crystal wreck, SS Rigel in the Baltic Sea, and explorer and photographer Stefan Panis takes us for a plunge into Belgium’s Pignon mine. 𝗗𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀 𝗼𝘂𝘁! The new issue goes live tomorrow, May 2nd. Subscribe to our free newsletter to get all these stories and more directly in your inbox. Mastering Navigation: The Indispensable Skill for Every Diver When we envision diving, we often think of serene underwater landscapes and the mesmerizing marine life that inhabits them. However, beneath the allure lies a crucial skill set that separates proficient divers from the rest: navigation. While the world below the surface offers unparalleled beauty and exploration, it is also vast and, without proper guidance, can be a challenging realm to navigate. Therefore, understanding and mastering navigation techniques is paramount for ensuring both safety and an enriching diving experience. The Importance of Navigation Skills Navigation is the backbone of diving. It empowers divers to explore with confidence, avoid potential hazards, and ensure a safe return to their starting point. Divers equipped with proficient navigation skills can traverse complex underwater terrains, locate dive sites, and discover intriguing underwater features without mishap. Furthermore, reliable navigation fosters responsibility not only for oneself but also for one's dive buddies, making it a pivotal aspect of responsible diving. Laying the Foundations: Dry Land Practice Contrary to what some might believe, the journey to mastering underwater navigation commences on land. A fundamental step in this process is becoming proficient with a compass on dry land. Practicing on terra firma provides a controlled environment where divers can familiarize themselves with the tool, rectifying any operational nuances before transitioning to underwater application. #DivingSkills #UnderwaterNavigation #ScubaEducation #CompassPractice #SafetyFirst #ScubaDiving #MarineExploration #NavigationMastery #DivingTips #ScubaCommunity #TenerifeDivemaster #TenerifeDivingAcademy #Divemaster #Tenerife #DivemasterInternshipTenerife #DivemasterTenerife #TDA #TenerifeDivingAcademy

My son made a great SCUBA training video for me the other day. I think he really knocked this one out of the park and may see this as a fruitful endeavor. For those familiar with Gary Klein's Recognition-Primed Decision (RPD) model, you already know how it leverages experience to enable fast, effective decisions in dynamic environments. But have you considered how this applies to SCUBA diving? 🌊 Underwater, divers face unique challenges—unexpected currents, visibility changes, or equipment issues. These scenarios require quick, confident decisions where the RPD model shines: 1️⃣ Experiencing the situation: Divers identify key cues from their environment based on training and past dives. 2️⃣ Analyzing the situation: Experience and training provides a mental catalog by which a diver may analyze a situation based on past history. This often occurs without conscious deliberation. 3️⃣ Act: With a solution identified, divers execute their decision swiftly and effectively -- and can they can pivot quickly if the action was incorrect. The beauty of the RPD model in SCUBA is its reliance on experience, which is why actively diving, ongoing training, scenario-based practice are essential. Very happy to discuss and share realistic training scenarios with other divers and open to all thoughts. Hella: Oakland slang word that has been super popular in Northern California since the 1970s #SCUBA #RPDModel #DecisionMaking #HOP #NAUI #SCUBAinstructor #HumanFactors #coldwaterdiver

𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗗𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗽𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝘂𝗿𝘀𝘂𝗶𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘅 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 In the four-part series, Global Underwater Explorers founder and president Jarrod Jablonski explores the historical development of GUE decompression protocols, with a focus on technical diving and the evolving trends in decompression research. “This four-part series will explore the historical development of Global Underwater Explorers’ (GUE) decompression protocols with a focus on technical diving and the evolving trends in decompression research. The series will include aspects important in recreational diving but with a greater focus on the variables affecting technical divers. Those with less technical experience will hopefully benefit from a substantial number of reference materials linked throughout the series. These support materials and the balanced perspectives I am striving to present are designed to encourage a broader grasp of this complex subject. I also wish to take a few chances with this series by presenting some controversial positions in the hope they will stimulate open discussion and deeper consideration on all sides.” “In the interest of disclosure, I would like to foreground my belief that it is impossible to reach a definitive conclusion regarding the most efficient or the safest decompression procedures, though such determinations depend largely on how you define these terms. Indeed, it is a lack of certainty that motivates me to write this series since most of us will experience our entire diving careers with uncertain knowledge and while evaluating contradictory advice. It is my intent to provide a balanced overview while asserting that one should pursue a measured response to the dictates of pundits on all sides of the debate, myself included. Most importantly, I will explore the idea that many details may not be as significant as we typically imagine. For the sake of informed consideration, we will even explore the idea that both sides—in fact, all of us—are wrong and that we might know less about decompression sickness than it appears.” Read the series in InDEPTH – https://lnkd.in/e7MhMTsK Images courtesy of Jarrod Jablonski. #technicaldiving #deepstop #GUE #deco #protocol #CCRdiving #cavediving #decompression #science #DCS #InDEPTH #GetDeeperIntoDiving

I just got back from a shark diving expedition, where it took careful planning and precise navigation to get us to our multiple destinations safely. Once there we assessed if it was the best place to find great white sharks and if not the captain (Slav) adjusted and charted a new course. Standing in the wheelhouse full of dials, leavers, maps, digital screens and compasses, it looked complicated to me, the inexperienced. But to the captain it was just a part of the process he’d mastered over years in the game. He knew exactly what to do, and his confidence even in rough seas, gave everyone on the boat confidence. I sat and thought about this, as I wrote this actually. This is just like a man’s journey, he needs to get clear on his destination and carefully plan and navigate his course. Sometimes the destination won’t be ideal so he must assess, adjust and chart a new course. It’s up to each man to use and master every tool at his disposal to ensure a safe path and successful journey. It’s only when a man is the master of his craft, has confidence in his role, can he ask others to trust him to lead them on their journey. A wife, kids, employees, all need to know they can trust the man that leads. For others to have Confidence in a man he must have confidence in himself- a man with a strong vision and values to guide him. It’s upto the man who leads to get those he leads, to their destination safely. This is the role of a captain, as well as that of a dad. This is an appreciation post to all those who captain their ship well, whether it be a real ship or an analogy for family and life. Tag a man below who is a great captain/ dad 👇 #shiplife #captain #mensmindset #mensmentor #rodneyfoxsharkexpeditions #sharkdiving
