Welcome our last PhD student Ms Fatemeh Sharifi recently joined in Program 4 Precision Early #GutMicrobiota Development led by Prof Dragana Dana Stanley from the CENTRAL QUEENSLAND UNIVERSITY. 1. Your previous technical background I earned my bachelor's degree in #biology from the University of Isfahan and master's degree in #medical #physiology from the Isfahan University of Medical Sciences Iran. After graduating, I worked as a research assistant in a physiology lab, gaining a diverse set of skills in #histology and #biochemistry, and studying #behavioural and physiological functions. 2. Motivation of pursuing your PhD qualification in #chickenmeat production My passion for the #poultry production industry originates from my #academic and #research experiences, particularly during my master's program. I developed a robust foundation in physiology and biological sciences, and I am eager to apply this knowledge to advance research in #gut #microbiology in poultry. My goal is to enhance poultry #health and efficiency through targeted scientific inquiry.   3. Your project overview My project focuses on the role of precision #glycans in shaping the development of #intestinal microbial communities and #immune system in poultry. In this project, I will investigate the use of precision glycans to manipulate gut #colonization by beneficial microorganisms and optimize the best procedures to achieve the best outcome for the bird’s health reflected in the increase in beneficial colonization and reduction of #pathogenic colonization. The focus of my project will be the evaluation of intestinal microbial functional capability via #shotgun #metagenomics and improvements in the immune system response evaluated under the #leakygut challenge model                                      4. Career plan post-PhD Upon completing my PhD, I plan to pursue a career in #appliedresearch and #industry development. My goal is to work with leading #agricultural or #foodtechnology companies, research institutions, or governmental agencies focused on enhancing poultry production systems.   5. Hobby and interest outside of work Outside of work, I enjoy #hiking and exploring the outdoors, spending time in nature helps me recharge and bringing a sense of #perspective. Additionally, I am passionate about #cooking and experimenting with new #recipes. This hobby not only allows me to be #creative but also aligns with my interest in food production and #nutrition. ***MSc thesis & Internship*** Dear network, Recently, I successfully defended my MSc thesis entitled: A Balancing Act: The Flavonoid Regulation of the Rhizospheric Patho-Microbiome to Maintain Root System Architecture Integrity. During the past 6 months, I got a glimpse of the fascinating and complex nature of plant-microbiome-pathogen interactions. Using various techniques, such as 16S microbiome sequencing, fungal performance assays, root-exudate analysis, and flavonoid-mutant screenings, I was able to unravel the impact of flavonoids on the tripartite interactions between A. thaliana, the patho-microbiome, and the fungal strain Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. conglutinans 5176. Overall, the hard work and dedication during the past months resulted in a great GPA of 9.5/10. Of course, I could not have done it without the help of some amazing people: my supervisor, Assis. Prof. Dr. Desalegn Etalo, PhD candidate sen xie, Lab Manager Laurens Deurhof, and not to forget the whole Laboratory of Phytopathology - Wageningen University Currently, I am entering the very last phase of my MSc in Plant Sciences by performing a research internship at Averis Seeds B.V. Over the next five months, I will focus on identifying the regulatory role of GpaV in potato resistance against the potato cyst nematode, Globodera pallida. To unravel its role, techniques like RNAseq, pot tests (spoeltoets), and in vitro propagation of potato will be combined. The internship will be under the supervision of PhD candidate Daan Langendoen, and with this internship, I hope to gain an even better understanding of the soil ecosystem by focusing on nematology and to get acquainted with the more practical side of plant sciences: plant breeding.
