Modern wind turbine blades are generally equipped with lightning protection systems (LPSs) to mitigate the destructive effects of lightning strikes. These systems typically involve surface-mounted lightning receptors connected to grounded down conductors. When a storm cloud induces a strong electric field, it generates upward streamers from the receptors on the blade, which connect with the downward leaders from the cloud, safely channeling the electrical charge to the ground.
