THE SECRETARY GENERAL, MARITIME ORGANIZATION OF WEST AND CENTRAL AFRICA (MOWCA) PARTICIPATION AT THE 5TH INTERNATIONAL MARITIME CONFERENCE/ REGIONAL MARITIME EXERCISE (IMCREMEX) 2024 AT ADMIRALITY CONFERENCE CENTRE, NAVAL DOCKYARD LIMITED, VICTORIAL ISLAND LAGOS, NIGERIA ON MAY 30-31, 2024 As part of the Secretary General’s engagement with Maritime stakeholders, His Excellency, Dr. Paul Adalikwu graced the 2024 International Maritime Conference organized by the Nigerian Navy, an activity to commemorate its 68th Anniversary celebrations. The event which was held at the admiralty Conference Center, Naval Dockyard Limited, Lagos, Nigeria on May 30-31, witnessed full participation of key industry players to deliberate on harnessing the benefits of the Blue Economy and leveraging on Maritime Security through concerted efforts. In his keynote presentation, tagged; “Leveraging Maritime Security, Collaboration for Harnessing Blue Economy: Strategies and Mechanisms for Success”, Dr. Adalikwu stressed the importance for stakeholders to collaboratively leverage Maritime Security by ensuring safe and secure maritime spaces in order for Africa to harness the potentials of the blue economy. He stated that the varied approaches to achieving success include fostering regional cooperation, enhancing marine domain awareness, combating Illegal, Unregulated and Unreported Fishing (IUUF) and maritime crimes, and investing in infrastructure and technology advocating for capacity building programmes and knowledge sharing initiatives. The MOWCA talisman affirmed that for the country to maximally benefit from the benefits of the potentials of the blue economy, the pivotal role of Nigerian Navy must continue to be fully supported with adequate funding and capacitation, especially in the training and re-training of personnel to bring them into alignment with the current global best practices and realize the nation’s dream of harvesting optimally from the blue economy regime. The African Union responded for air space liberalization effort and formulated Yamoussoukro Decision of 1999 and later the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM) on the 28th of January 2018, during the 30th Ordinary Session of the AU Assembly held in Addis Ababa. It is one of Agenda 2063 African Union flagship projects aimed to create a single unified and liberalized air transport market in Africa. The instrumentality of the project is the full implementation of Yamoussoukro Decision of 1999, signed by 44 African countries in Yamoussoukro, the de jure capital city of Ivory Coast.

Today, March 1st marks a momentous occasion for Saint Vincent and the Grenadines as the multi-island state, in its capacity as Pro Tempore President of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), hosts the opening ceremony of the VIII CELAC Summit of the Heads of State and Government. The Summit is focused on inter-regional achievements and seeks to advance the process of formulating a CELAC Declaration. It is meant to creates a space for dialogue among equal but differentiated partnering countries, with the aim of deepening political, economic, social and cultural integration and strengthening the ties of solidarity and cooperation among Latin America and the Caribbean countries. In light of the unprecedented global challenges and the complex daily issues surrounding climate change, regional conflict, hunger eradication and sustainable development, CELAC is strategically positioned to be the regional voice and advocate at the international level on common issues which affects persons in this region of the world.  Specific to hunger eradication, the CELAC Plan for Food and Nutrition Security 2025 will serve as a cross-cutting tool for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and will also encourage Latin American and the Caribbean countries to redouble their efforts to identify key areas that will make it possible to speed up and consolidate the process of eradicating hunger while tackling the twin burden of malnutrition. https://lnkd.in/eiuxcQPG

#MarineExploration 🌊 | Discover the secrets of Polynesia's lagoons as we look behind the scenes of the RESOLAG network! 🏝️ French Polynesia, a treasure-trove of 15,000 km² of lagoons, is home to a unique observation network. Set up in 2017 by the Marine Resources Department, RESOLAG has been supported since 2019 by the PROTEGE project, funded by the European Union and implemented by the SPC. Security in the eastern DRC and Great Lakes is worsening despite numerous regional stabilisation efforts. Within this context, the African Union (AU) also has sought solutions but lacks a coherent strategy for the #DRC and region. My latest analysis argues that a clear #AU engagement strategy can break the deadlock and open a path to #stability in the region. It could help avoid duplication of regional measures, reduce competition for influence among states and regional groups, eliminate coordination gaps, and limit ad hoc deployments. To be successful, the strategy should hinge on equipping a military force that can effectively combat #M23 and other armed groups. Simultaneously, it should invest heavily in the Luanda process to open the door to concessions and a political solution between #Kigali and #Kinshasa. For more details, see below:
