Australia’s Energy System needs 10,000 kms of new trasmission lines The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) has calculated that ten thousands of additional transmission lines are required to support the country’s ambitions to produce all of its electricity with renewable sources by 2050. Imagine more than two times the width of the Australian continent to finally sustain a concrete energy transition, and by far the biggest transformation of the National Electricity Market (NEM) since it was formed 25 years ago. #Webuild Interesting article... https://lnkd.in/dVdAK82d

🔋 Sharing some thoughts on the challenges and opportunities of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) in Europe and the Baltics. Batteries are undeniably the most complex assets among Renewable Energy Sources (RES) when it comes to operational strategy. As ancillary service markets in the Baltics are just forming, many uncertainties and question marks still loom before we see the rollout of BESS in the region. The main Xs of the equation are: 📶 How markets will develop and what would be the main revenue stream? 💰 How much income BESS operators can expect to collect? 200k € / MW/year? 100k € / MW/year? 📖 More thoughts here: https://lnkd.in/df-gxEKJ #BESS #flexibility #energystorage

Will be interesting to watch the development of this and hopefully the development of standards for autonomous response of all IBR (loads as well as generating inverters) so that less FCAS is required.
Two new frequency control ancillary service markets have been introduced into the National Electricity Market. They harness the power of new and emerging energy infrastructure to maintain power system security and safety. ⚡ What are frequency control ancillary services? They provide a fast injection of energy, or fast reduction of energy, to manage supply and demand. What’s holding back the UK’s clean-energy charge? "The UK’s renewable energy generation capacity has increased hugely in recent years. In Q1 2023, the sector’s share of total electricity generation hit a record 47.8%, according to the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. But that proportion would be even higher if it weren’t so difficult for new renewable generators to plug into the national grid." #renewableenergy #cleanenergy

ESG issues sit at the complex core of balancing reliability, affordability, and emissions reduction in the National Energy Market. See the commentary from my colleagues, Joao Segorbe and Paul Schoff, on this.
In an unexpected update this month to the 2023 Electricity Statement of Opportunities, the Australian Energy Market Operator's message is clear: for the next few years, reliability risks are expected to be above the standard defined for the National Electricity Market. Mainly driven by delays in delivering necessary network, renewable and storage investments, this is valuable reading for those in the industry: https://lnkd.in/gvHuvNBu #energy #electricity #ESG

The Hornsdale Power Reserve in Australia: One of the most successful renewable energy microcrid projects, the first biggest battery storage in the world today. OVERVIEW The Hornsdale Power Reserve is the world’s first big battery. It provides essential grid-support services. The first 100 MW/129 MWh was completed in November 2017. In its first two years of operation the Hornsdale Power Reserve confirmed the benefits associated with grid-scale batteries in the National Electricity Market and saved South Australian consumers over $150 million. Following this success, a 50 MW/64.5 MWh expansion was completed in September 2020. As part of the expansion the full 150 MW is being upgraded to include Tesla’s Virtual Machine Mode, enabling the battery to provide inertia support services to the electricity grid.
