Hope CommUnity Center is just one of the 19 organizations that form part of the first cohort of the Power Building & Justice program at HIP. The program has focused its first efforts in the South and Southwest to resource Latine and BIPOC-serving nonprofits in power building, civic engagement, and movement building to advance social and racial justice. Organizations like Hope were selected into the cohort for their ability to be vehicles for change. This is why the practice of trust-based philanthropy has been so powerful. The unrestricted funding has allowed some of those resources to go directly into operating budgets, allowing organizations to “operate from a space of abundance and take risks,” as Felipe, Executive Director of Hope, explained. Hope CommUnity Center remains an inspirational model. It showcases the profound impact that local nonprofits can have in building power within and for Latine communities. And it reminds us that the most legitimate solutions lie at the heart of our multigenerational and often intersectional communities. Part of my development must be credited to many experiences with the Sacramento Kids First Coalition. We had the opportunity to survey, build with local as well as nation-wide coalition, have input on the drafting of language, and engage with elected officials while holding them accountable. One of the things that make this coalition so special is the variety of orgs that have consistently stood with youth and pushed for real budgetary systems change with a priority on racial equity and socio-emotional wellness. While diversity and inclusion makes room for much needed voices to be at the table, it doesn’t address the equity in services, benefits, or education provided. We are now at the implementation stage for many efforts that we have been involved with such as the Sacramento Children’s Fund in the city and the Juvenile Justice Realignment process at the county level. West Harlem arts centers share their stories of life after the pandemic S/O to Elliot Heath and The Columbia Spectator for this excellent profile of four of our grantees (The Morningside Players, the Mama Foundation for the Arts, Dances for a Variable Population, and Arts & Minds) and the crucial work that they do in our community. West Harlem has always been a haven for creative expression, boasting an array of arts-based organizations and community centers. With nonprofits in particular, outside funding and government grants help sustain programming, which can bolster community involvement. The COVID-19 pandemic, however, presented unforeseen hardships to small businesses across the city, including artistic centers. The Morningside Players, the Mama Foundation for the Arts, Dances for a Variable Population, and Arts & Minds, who all receive funding from the West Harlem Development Corporation, are four West Harlem-based organizations that faced such challenges. As a husband, father and professional I share many of the same aspirations as many of you. A future that’s bright and full of good health, prosperity and promise for the generations that follow. As many of our youth become of age to vote, most have little understanding as to how public policy is woven into every aspect of life in America. Like me, you have likely noticed a lack of policy education in schools across the US. There is an immediate need to provide America's youth with a quality civics education, yet most students never learn about the critical systems and policies that shape their lives. To build a better future our team has been hard at work to join forces as a community - to be intentional in our effort to ensure young people have access to the tools they need to understand and engage with policy. In addition to supporting policymakers and engaging the general public on policy matters, our mission is also focused on providing civic education to high school students across America. Our Policy Education Program is active in 15 schools spanning 12 states, in both well-funded rural settings as well as under-served urban districts. Among other fundraising initiatives, we’ve also launched a Giving Tuesday campaign to continue the expansion of the program to 50 schools by Summer 2024. Several members of our community have agreed to match the first $10,000 raised. So, every $35 means $70, every $100 means $200…and so on. In the nonprofit sector, we often talk about the value and necessity of involving lived experience perspectives in our work. Yet, when it comes time to walk the walk of that work, we fall short. Next Thursday, I'll have the chance to share space with some fantastic friends and colleagues that work extensively in this arena with me. This is a great chance for funders, service providers, and nonprofit leaders to come and hear how two non-profits have approached this work, and how we've succeeded, the challenges we've faced, and where we can grow. Beyond just hearing from us, you'll also have a chance to engage directly in this issue from your own agency/foundation/organizational perspective, and leave with a clearer idea of how to support community and lived experience engagement in your own work.

Meet Aliento (📍- United States 🇺🇸) Aliento is a Kindness in Community Fund grantee and non-profit organization that serves undocumented, DACA, and mixed immigration status families to transform trauma into hope and action. They are youth-led and directly impact people and allies invested in the well-being, emotional healing, and leadership development of those impacted by the inequities of lacking an immigration status. “In Arizona, the prevalence of anti-immigrant rhetoric, practices, and policies shapes Aliento’s approach to addressing mental health needs. The atmosphere of immigrant hate impacts the mental health of youth, especially those from immigrant communities. This environment exacerbates stress, anxiety, and trauma among these young individuals, creating a complex, multifaceted set of challenges. Alex Jarrell how do districts get more funding!!!? I loved your piece in The 74 about Federal-Philanthropic partnerships. This is a funding strategy that I had not heard about before, and it’s particularly relevant given the looming fiscal cliff. In the article you described setting up these partnerships when you worked at the nonprofit NSNO with the aim of supporting local schools. My question is, how can K12 district leaders proactively foster these sorts of partnerships themselves? Out of all the causes I care about, children hold a special place in my heart, and here's why. There's something about their innocence, curiosity, and resilience that inspire me to do everything I can to support them and I believe that supporting children - both boys and girls - is crucial for building a better future for our world. On this Children's Day, I need to remind you that these children you see are the future leaders, innovators, and change-makers of our world. They have the potential to bring about positive change and make a significant impact. However, many children worldwide lack access to basic necessities like education, healthcare, and safety, hindering their growth and development, and ultimately affecting us all. So, what can we do today to support children worldwide? We can: • Donate to organizations providing educational resources and support to underprivileged children • Volunteer at local schools or organizations working with children • Advocate for policies prioritizing children's education and well-being • Mentor a child or young person in our community Whether you're a parent, educator, or simply someone who cares, every effort counts. Reflecting on my Saturday morning spent with Dr. Linette Etheredge, passionate Learning Services Manager and powerful driving force behind – amongst other projects - Vinnies Victoria's remarkable free education programs. Why? #AntiPovertyWeek, 15 - 27 October, has just started. This year's focus is on ending #childpoverty, which resonates deeply with St Vincent de Paul Society's (SVDPV's) mission, particularly through our eight highly successful education programs across Victoria led by our dedicated Learning Services team and passionate volunteers - many experienced #teachers. SVDPV firmly believes that education is a transformative force in breaking the cycle of poverty. Our programs are not only based on growth mindset principles. They are also trauma-informed, recognising the unique needs of children facing adversity and disadvantages. This ensures they receive holistic support—social, emotional, and academic—acknowledging the potential effects of trauma on their learning and wellbeing. Our highly trained volunteers embody empathy, sensitivity, and a commitment to creating a supportive, welcoming and healing environment for children. And their parents and carers. While interviewing some of them, I was humbled and amazed by the passion of our generous volunteers. Most of them are educators dedicated to empowering the children in our programs. The gratitude from parents I talked to spoke volumes about the impact of SVDPV's initiatives. I cannot wait to work with Alicia Nolan, capturing these heart-warming contributions in a little video for Anti-Poverty Week. Speaking of it, let's remember the broader context: more than 3.32 million people or 13.4% of the Australian population, live below the poverty line.
