Together we make a difference

About us

Many Hands leverages the power of collective giving to support nonprofits serving and empowering Washington, DC area women, children, and families in socioeconomic need. As the leading giving circle in the DC metro area, we have granted more than $2.5 million to local nonprofits since 2004. Originally a women’s organization inspired by the Impact100 model, we continue to prioritize the empowerment of donors that philanthropy has historically overlooked. We welcome all members who share this goal. As an all-volunteer organization, Many Hands empowers all members to help shape grantmaking decisions. However, we have no volunteer requirement. Members are always welcome to participate in the ways that serve their interests and goals. On average, 40% of members serve on a review committee or volunteer in an operational role. If you *are* interested in participating in grantmaking, no experience or expertise is required. Fellow members will provide training and support you every step of the way. To learn more, visit us at manyhandsdc.org or email us at membership@manyhandsdc.org.

In her latest piece for Vox, Rachel Cohen reflects on how the growing emphasis on structural solutions to issues like climate change, inequality, and homelessness has fueled a generational decline in formal volunteering, donating, and social and individual well-being--and shares her personal journey back to volunteering, which began as a member of Many Hands' Housing Committee. Read her thought-provoking essay at the link below. And if you'd like to learn more about membership, visit us online at manyhandsdc.org! #collectivegiving #givingcircles #volunteering

Over the last 15 years, ideas crystallized among my generation that real social change would come only from mass protest and collective action. Volunteering, donating, and modifying one’s behavior were, at best, unproductive; at worst, harmful distractions from the change we really need.  I wrote an essay for Vox about the costs of these ideas, and why I changed my mind: https://lnkd.in/eDxfxehy

"Being involved in collective giving has made giving both more joyful and humbling... When you see the incredible energy [community leaders] devote to their work, the impact they have, and the enthusiasm they inspire, it’s hard not to fall in love." ✨ Today, we hear from Mary Kwak, a volunteer reviewer with Spur Local and member of four local giving circles -- Next Gen Giving Circle, Many Hands, Collective 365, and Cherry Blossom Giving Circle. Here, we dive into her family's story of generosity, how giving circles have shaped her approach to philanthropy, and what the collective giving movement can continue to do together. Thank you, Mary, for sharing your story with us! #OnGiving #philanthropy #collectivegiving

LAST CHANCE to see this powerful exhibit exploring the racial history of upper Northwest DC. Undesign the Redline DC is organized by a group of local faith communities--St. Columba’s Episcopal Church, Adas Israel Congregation, Chevy Chase Presbyterian Church, Temple Micah, and Temple Sinai--with the participation of people with ties to communities barred or displaced from Ward 3 and groups and institutions wrestling with the lasting impacts of these actions. The last program offered in conjunction with the exhibit, "Reparations: Learn, Consider, and Discuss Where We Go From Here," takes place tonight at the Cleveland Park Library from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. It includes a screening of "The Cost of Inheritance," an hour-long PBS documentary that explores the complex issue of reparations in the United States, and conversation with local leaders. #undesigntheredline
