🏙️🌏 This year’s World Habitat Day theme, “Engaging Youth to Create a Better Urban Future,” highlights the importance of involving young people in designing sustainable cities. Youth-driven innovations are crucial to creating urban spaces that are not only eco-friendly but also resilient and healthy for everyone. At One Health Society, we understand that the future of cities is directly tied to the health of the people, animals, and ecosystems that inhabit them. Together, we can empower the next generation to build cities that are truly sustainable and healthy. Do you want to switch from soiled bedding sentinels, but worry about the cost? University of Chicago conducted and published a detailed cost analysis when making the switch to exhaust dust testing (Luchins 2020). They found that environmental health monitoring was 26% less expensive than soiled bedding sentinels. By not needing to pay for ordering, shipping, and maintaining sentinel animals, this method of pathogen detection can decrease cost, while also reducing the number of animals used in research. There are a number of factors to consider in your own cost analysis, so our Rodent Health Monitoring Initiative created a downloadable spreadsheet to make calculations easier for you at your institution. Access the spreadsheet, as well as research into the cost of switching from sentinels, here: https://lnkd.in/ebv3Rft4

There is an indelible connection between the rights, health, and wellbeing of people, animals, and the planet. The evidence is clear that for humans to thrive, animals and the rest of the natural world must also thrive. In collaboration with other experts, Phoenix Zones Initiative has developed an impact assessment tool and metrics that professionals, communities, and policy makers can use to gauge the intended and unintended impacts of proposed or existing policies, industries, and infrastructure on the interdependent rights, health, and wellbeing of people, animals, and the planet. Did you know about the Green Heart Project? With the Inflation Reduction Act providing funding for cities to plant more trees this year, the Green Heart Louisville study provides compelling evidence for urban greening projects. By strategically planting trees, especially in disadvantaged areas near highways, we can create healthier, more equitable communities. The results are striking - after just a few years, people living in the tree-planted areas showed a 13% reduction in high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, a key marker of inflammation linked to heart disease, diabetes and certain cancers. This improvement is comparable to the benefits of starting a regular exercise routine. But the benefits don't stop there. The study also found that BMI and cholesterol levels improved over time in the tree-planted neighborhoods. Researchers believe the trees act as natural filters, removing harmful air pollutants from the highway that can cause inflammation and exacerbate health issues. This research is a crucial step in quantifying the health benefits of urban trees and making the case for investing in our urban forests! Learn more about this project: Abernathy, B. (2020). Green Heart Louisville. https://lnkd.in/e-fyGNnA Van Velzer, R. (2019). Rebuilding Louisville's Urban Forest To Combat Climate Change. https://lnkd.in/eYvzBWzg Sullivan, K. & Thompson, A. (2024). Living in tree-filled neighborhoods may reduce risk of heart disease, study shows. https://lnkd.in/evMDANgg
The link between trees and human health is vital and in 2017, the first-of-its-kind, Green Heart Project was launched to explore this connection. Led by The Nature Conservancy and the Christina Lee Brown Envirome Institute, this groundbreaking study demonstrates the power of adding trees to neighborhoods as a public health strategy.
