🏊🏼♀️Human contact with coral reefs doesn't always look as obvious as in these two photos. Yet, several scientific papers have shown that divers and snorkellers often unintentionally cause harm to the same environment they love so much... How come? 🤿Unsecured gear, fin kicks, hand contact with corals, sand movement... these are some of the ways that the reef might accidentally be damaged by marine users. A research found that SCUBA diving impacted coral reefs through divers' direct contact that "caused breakage, fragmentation and led to disease" (Sumanapala, D et al. 2023). In 1999 a study revealed that impacts were also caused to a giant coral colony off the coast of Taiwan (Soong, K et al. 1999. 🗣️Awareness and the development and enhancement of educational activities during the pre-dive briefings are key to the protection of the marine ecosystem 🌏 #MapTheGiants #GiantCorals #Corals #CoralReef #Unimib #SaveCoralReefs #SaveTheCorals #SCUBA #Maldives #MarineConservation #MarineBiodiversity #ReefResilience

Why Don’t Sea Creatures Implode? Diving into the deep sea is no easy feat for humans. Unlike deep-sea creatures, our bodies aren't built to handle the immense pressure. Creatures near hydrothermal vents, like certain worms, don't have air-filled sacs, so they don't face pressure differences that could crush them. Whales and fish, however, have to expel air from their lungs as they dive deeper to avoid the same fate. The problem for us isn't the pressure on our limbs but the pressure difference in our lungs. It's a fascinating reminder of how diverse and specialized life in the deep sea truly is. Share this video if you've ever wondered why deep sea creatures don't get crushed under pressure! #DeepSeaCreatures #PressureAdaptations #DrTimsAquatics

Today, I am fortunate enough to be attending the United Nations World Oceans Day. What is out of sight should not be out of mind. Marine biology, oceanography, marine science – fields still relatively new in the world of academia. In today's age of endless information, there's a ocean-wide disconnect between humans and nature due to technology. We can showcase the beauty and the devastation, but how do we close the gap? Connecting with the ocean through activities like sailing, scuba diving, surfing, or fishing can spark a desire to protect what we love. [Eco] tourism has made waves, bringing people to experience the ends of out planet firsthand. It's crucial to equip the next generation with knowledge and skills to safeguard our oceans. Water is wet, salt corrodes, pressure exists underwater, and you can't have nautical without knots. The oldest trades on the planet will give us the skills to protect and propell us into the future. Let's empower the youth to become stewards of our precious oceans! #MarineTrades #BlueEconomy #BoatCaptain #MaritimeServices #BlueEconomyWorkforceDevelopment #OceanConservation #NextGeneration #ProtectOurOceans #OceanStewards #ProtectWhatYouLove #MakeWaves #AwakenNewDepths #UnitedNations The Explorers Club #NewEnglandChapterOfTheExplorersClub

Whoops! Didn't mean to scare you there — was just paying a visit to the EPA Diving team. 🦈 #EPADivers are data gatherers, note takers, and photographers that observe and document changes to aquatic environments. EPA Divers participate in diverse activities, such as: 🔬 Sampling submerged drums of unknown materials 🗺️ Mapping illegal underwater dump sites 🐟 Inspecting waste discharges from seafood processing facilities 🪸 Assessing the health of seagrass meadows, coral reefs, and other important marine habitats Learn more about scientific diving, and the EPA Divers team: https://www.epa.gov/diving #SharkWeek

Iceland's Silfra fissure offers a once-in-a-lifetime experience: diving between two continents. Located within Þingvellir National Park, this underwater rift is where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates drift apart by about 2 cm (0.8 inches) each year. With water filtered through volcanic rock, the visibility here is stunning, often exceeding 100 meters (328 feet), making it one of the clearest dive sites on the planet. The unique geological setting allows divers to float between two worlds, literally touching both plates at the same time—a surreal encounter with the Earth's ever-shifting crust.

Freedivers in the old world in a glance. Who the first divers were, we don't know. Nor can we be sure why they dived, thought it's fairly safe to assume that fishing foro mollusks, crustaceans, and other food was amajor reason. We do know that mean were diving as early as 4500 B.C., archeologists have unearthed shells in Mesopotamia that must have come up from the seafloor. But there is a gap in the history of diving of more than a thousand years_until the Theban VI Dynasty in Eygept, around 3200 B.C. many of the archeological sites there infdicates that freediving was wide spread fro the shells the ornaments were made from could have been obtained only by diving. learn more https://lnkd.in/dBcA9hZz.... #freediving #freedivinghistory #freedivingsession #freedivingphotography #freedivinglife #freedivingcourse #Aqaba #jordan #padi #paditv #redsea

Costal Manta Rays (aka "Reef Mantas") are one of two manta species that you can see while diving in Hawaii. Coastal Mantas (Mobula alfredi) are found in nearshore waters, usually where there are concentrations of plankton. And, unlike their pelagic cousins, Coastal Mantas appear to have a home range and don't migrate. In other words, each island (e.g., Maui, Oahu, the Big Island) has its own population with no apparent interaction between groups - at least according to tracking data. Individual mantas can be identified and tracked by unique pigment spots, which are especially prominent over the ventral abdomen.

Consisting of over 300 islands, Palau is an archipelago in the Western Pacific Ocean region of Micronesia. Known for its stunning marine life and crystal-clear waters, Palau is a popular destination for scuba diving and snorkeling enthusiasts. This Sentinel-2 false colour image captured on 31-10-2023 shows Koror, the commercial centre of Palau (grey and white), surrounded by multiple islands (red) and fringing coral reefs (dark purple). The job took 2 minutes to setup and run using buff.ly/4bqTTwt; traditional methods could take 2-3 days. The results can then be exported to PDF, or the data can be imported into your GIS tooling for further analysis. I spent two years working in ocean conservation so I wanted to visit the new Ocean Pavilion of the Seattle Aquarium. My thoughts on it are below. 🐟 🐠 🐡 It was good, but not great. There was a massive beautiful coral reef exhibit (see image) which was the highlight. It is intended to represent the marine life of the Coral Triangle (one of the few remaining gorgeous scuba diving destinations).I also loved the seemingly interactive eagle rays that swam by the windows. A seahorse exhibit was cool too. 👍 There were a few other exhibits in the new Ocean Pavilion, but I wasn’t wowed. Maybe it is because I know a lot about this topic already from my ocean conservation work, I am a long-time scuba diver 🐬, and I volunteered at the Seattle Aquarium for 8 months in the past. For people newer to marine life and conservation issues, it may be more interesting and exciting. My reaction could also be my rapidly increasing unease with animals in captivity. Containing animals doesn’t sit well with me, not sure it ever truly did. I would set them all free! The older aquarium section felt a little outdated, unkept and unclean. That was disappointing. I think it was mainly the contrast with the brand-new section. We did enjoy the harbor seals, otters and the getting “hugged” by sea urchins at the touch tanks. 😁 Tickets for adults are spendy at about $45 a ticket for adults, double what it should be in my opinion. (Youth tickets were about $26.) And parking nearby was a bear, also very pricey. Hope that helps as you decide to visit or not. Cheers to Seattle for all its work on the Seattle Waterfront. It is starting to look wonderful! #oceanconservation #oceans #seattle #seattleaquarium #seattleactivities #seattlewaterfront #sustainability
