In the heart of roaring flames and blinding smoke, a firefighter's grit is tested to its limits. Among the many daunting tasks, victim extrication stands as arguably the most challenging. As victims today weigh 30lbs more on average than a generation ago, and often have little to no clothing to grip onto, the task becomes perilous. Firefighter Chad Dailey, a 32-year veteran of KCFD, confronted this challenge head-on.   He noticed that despite their valiant efforts, firefighters often faced the grim reality of “drag & drops” due to the victims' slippery or bare skin. A victim's life could hang by the mere thread of a firefighter’s grip strength, a realization that spurred a relentless quest for a solution. Dailey, along with other innovative minds, embarked on a journey to eradicate this weak link in rescue operations. They sought a method to ensure a secure grip on the victim, to prevent the dreaded pause to re-adjust grips amidst a perilous rescue.   The ingenious response to this came in the form of a loop of webbing, a simple yet revolutionary idea, conceived to lock a firefighter's wrists around a victim securely. With endless tweaks and tests, this idea evolved into the VIKCTIM Drag Strap. This device, a product of necessity and ingenuity, shifted the weight from the firefighter’s grip to their shoulders, thereby engaging the body's strongest muscle group, the legs, in the rescue endeavor.   The VIKCTIM Drag Strap easily incorporates into most existing bunker gear offering a cost effective way improving rescue operation efficiency. The strap eliminates the 'grip issue', enabling firefighters to swiftly, securely, and efficiently extract victims from the jaws of death. Thanks for all the feedback and kind words on my last article re: Aid Stations - thinking of a few next possible topics I can dig into, not least double-sided aid stations, finer ideas and considerations in signage and equipment, course planning while thinking like a certifier, and more general examples of 'things I'd like to see more in racing' with examples of people who are doing great things with it around the US. If you have any other thoughts for good topics, or want to have nerdy conversations about 'next-level' race ops on here, I'd like to join in and facilitate anything that advances our industry. In the meantime a shameless plug that if you are looking for someone to fine-tune the finer details of your race operations and project management, I am still looking for a few good projects to balance out existing clients, with nearly full-time availability most of the year as of now. (Tending less towards the end of months - especially March, April, and October). I operate primarily in Houston in the winter, mostly out of Denver through the summer, with regular trips already planned to Las Vegas and West Virginia (near Pitt and DC/BWI). I was asked once again recently why I don't develop a hockey puck type road flare like everyone else has. I asked this person why I should do so and their answer was that the puck type flares are designed to be run over by cars, trucks, busses, etc. My thinking is that the developers of hockey puck type low profile road flares develop them with the priority being placed on storage when not in use. On the other hand, I spent 25 years as a volunteer firefighter responding to emergency calls on roadways such as I-95, I-80, Route 46, and Route 4 here in New Jersey and because of my experience, I placed the product development priority on being seen when my flares are being deployed in the roadway. After all, that is why my customers are purchasing them in the first place. Question...Why do we deploy road flares? Answer...So that oncoming motorists see them, stay away from them, and thus stay away from you and your personnel. Question...What do you think it means when motorists are running over your hockey puck type and low profile road flares? Answer...It means that they are too low to the ground to be effectively seen and avoided by drivers. This also means that these motorists are coming dangerously close to you and your personnel.
