As we get back to work on this first workday of the New Year we have an opportunity to start fresh. To use both the symbolic and strategic nature of a new year to energize ourselves and our teams. Why not start this year with a commitment to team and employee recognition? As this report published by Gallup and Workhuman demonstrates such a commitment is not only good for the employees but for the bottom line and overall performance of the organization as well. The report also provides some concrete suggestions for embedding a culture of recognition in our organizations. As we know, nonprofits and purpose-driven organizations struggle disproportionately with staff retention and motivation. And often have fewer resources to address this with extrinsic rewards such as salary and benefits. As the report shows, recognition in and of itself has significant intrinsic value that positively affects motivation, enjoyment, a sense of belonging and inclusion, and organizational connectiveness resulting in lower employee turnover, higher productivity, and better compliance with safety standards. Employee recognition is also associated with a stronger connection to the organization’s goals and mission. Committing to a culture of recognition seems like a positive way to kick off 2024 with our teams. Perhaps even find time this week to recognize individual and team efforts from 2023 while reiterating the goals for 2024.
