You have to play the hand you’re dealt. Tucked up in bed on a cold Sunday night I watched the 1998 movie Rounders. Not sure why rounders but I felt drawn to it, I’d probably caught a clip on TikTok of it and planted the seed. It’s a great film Matt Damon and John Malkovich smashed it in that last poker scene but if you’ve watched it a couple of times you stop watching for the tells and start realising this film's lessons on life. " You have to play the hand you’re dealt " It’s one of the most popular taglines from Rounders. You can’t change the hand but you can choose whether to gamble it or play it. I’ve never understood the art of poker, probably because I thought it was an art when in fact it's a science, one of human emotion. You play the man more than you play the cards, and it hit me that life is like that. You have to control your emotions. Be poised and calm, unfaltering like a surgeon's hand. Ready to lean in when needed and walk away if the situation warrants it. I get why so many people in business play Poker, they not just gambling they’re honing their skills, albeit while having some fun. If you can take the emotion out of the hands and consider the size of the bet a tool to facilitate your game then you are likely to be able to make clearer decisions. So if anyone can teach me how to play. I'm game.
