This year's Sunday Times Giving List reveals that the top 100 donors gave an impressive £3.233 billion, yet this marks a £208 million decline from last year. Our Chief Executive, Neil Heslop OBE, emphasises: “It is a challenging time for charities as they face rising demand for their services alongside higher costs, so it is concerning that the Giving List this year indicates that giving is down. We must find new ways to foster a renewed culture of giving in the UK.” As we celebrate those who continue to give so generously, it is more important than ever that those who can afford to give are inspired, so that together we give more. ___________________________________________ Since 2005, we've partnered with The Sunday Times to produce the Giving List, part of the annual Rich List, which tracks the philanthropic activity of more than a third of Britain’s 350 wealthiest people. This is really important strategically for our sector. #Charitable #Grantmakers by themselves won't be able to shoulder the demand entirely. Rectifying the dire state of #LocalGovernment finances but also improving #Corporate giving and #Philanthropy, getting it higher up the policy agenda has to be part of the solution in my opinion. Also getting the #DormantAssets actually deployed to communities via #CommunityWealthFund(s).
📈Amid a serious decline in funding - from government, local authorities and individual donations - grants from charitable foundations are one of the few funding streams that has remained stable during a time of increased demand for charities. Emily Harle's analysis in Third Sector explores how this demand is shifting upstream and the impact it is having on grantmakers. https://lnkd.in/em7qTbv6 🔍𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬: 1. 📊 Surge in applications: Association of Charitable Foundations members report staggering increases in application volumes – ranging from 30% to an overwhelming 100%. 2. ⚖️ Capacity constraints: grantmakers face the delicate balance of managing this surge, usually with a very small staff team, while maintaining fair, effective evaluation processes. 3. 🔄 Adaptive responses from funders: - Increasing funding allocations - Restructuring grant programmes to better align with charities' needs - Streamlining decision-making processes - Reducing administrative burden on applicants 4. ⏸️ Temporary Pauses: Some grantmakers have had to temporarily suspend new applications while implementing these essential changes. At Association of Charitable Foundations we emphasise the importance of collaboration between funders. When grantmakers consider pausing their programmes, we encourage dialogue with other funders to understand the ecosystem-wide impact of such decisions. #CharitableFunding #Philanthropy #NonprofitSector #GrantMaking #SocialImpact

It's tough out there! Charities are under incredible strain after years of cuts and austerity that have caused them to be needed more than ever by their communities. It is a perfect storm. More need. More red tape. More legislation Higher prices Less funding from All sources as funders, individuals, businesses struggle with the same issues And governments make cuts which cause more problems Charities pick up the pieces of the mess they make The announcement of the closure of Zoes Place in Liverpool is another example of the challenges the sector faces. Hundreds of charities are closing and vital services lost. Many charity staff are burning out, becoming ill or giving up in desperation and exhaustion. It is not bad management. It is unprecedented times. There has never been a greater need for people to give and support their local charities. Give without expecting lots of the charity's time. Give without tieing up the money to projects which means they can't pay staff or bills. Offering time is great but doesn't pay the bills. Regular, unrestricted giving, even in small amounts is like gold dust. Together we can make a difference.

The Community Foundation serving Tyne & Wear and Northumberland has links across the North East, and has supported hundreds of charities, community groups and grassroots organisations across its 35-year history. With the majority of its supporters based in the region, the charity has a strong endowment model that sees its invested assets stand at almost £100 million, providing a steady source of support for dozens of organisations each year. A new giving initiative – the North East Roots Fund – aims to spread its net a little wider, encouraging those with childhood or family links to the region, who have gone on to find success elsewhere, to become supporters of the foundation, not only financially but with their time and expertise too. John Hollingsworth, chief philanthropy officer, says: “We are looking to build a network of people who want to give back to the region, both financially and non-financially. “There is a whole diaspora of people born and raised in the region who have gone out into the world and found success – their stories and influence can be really inspiring to people here in the North East. “We want to tell positive, inspiring stories and to celebrate the region and its broader accomplishments.” Two of the founding members of North East Roots, Magnus Willis and Steve Wooler, explain their involvement in the fund and their hopes for its success. The Golden Bottle Trust (GBT) was established in 1985 to further the philanthropic aims of the Hoare family. This approach mirrors our business ethos – prioritising long-term decisions and fostering trusted relationships. The GBT likes to give unrestricted funding; it recognises that the charities it works with are the experts in their fields and trusts them to allocate funds to deliver the best outcomes. One of the GBT’s longstanding partnerships is with a grant-making charity called The Fore. The Fore provides grants to small charities, and has had a huge impact, with 50% of the charities in its pilot programme now operating nationally. It has used unrestricted grants from the GBT to fund core costs, allowing it to build and scale the infrastructure required to deliver its operations. Read our latest Golden Bottle Trust report to learn more about our trust-based approach to philanthropy. https://lnkd.in/etPSUZbU #TheGoldenBottleTrust #Philanthropy #Sustainability #TheFore #ImpactfulGiving #Totalportfolioimpact
