This week at Aalto University Aalto WiTLAB we started with a new session that is focused on decolonizing Development. Naomi Rouse led the first session on the 'Danger of a single story' in implementing development projects. Interesting insights from this session : 1. When implementing development projects we need to avoid the 'Danger of a single story' where organizations only emphasize on the specific community challenges and needs in a particular context without Linking these challenges with an 'Assets based community development ' approach where you broadly look at the assets these communities already have and how they can be leveraged through a community prioritization process to facilitate the communities to solve their own problems. 2. While addressing specific challenges with communities, avoid sharing your ideas, let the communities decide what they want and think about as their priorities. Be a facilitator otherwise external ideas mostly tend to fail to scale due to lack of ownership.

Businesses have the power to drive positive change in communities by providing economic opportunities, fostering innovation, and supporting social initiatives. By investing in local infrastructure, creating jobs, and offering valuable products and services, businesses can enhance the quality of life for residents and contribute to the overall growth and evolution of the community. Additionally, businesses can partner with local organizations and government entities to address pressing social issues and support community development projects. I just completed my community engagement course. The summary of this course is:- Community engagement is the cornerstone of sustainable change. By actively listening, valuing diverse perspectives, and fostering collaboration, we build stronger, more resilient communities. Let's invest in genuine connections and empower every voice to create a brighter future together. Community engagement is more than just an initiative—it's a commitment to understanding and uplifting every voice in our neighborhoods. When we engage with authenticity and respect, we tap into the collective wisdom and strength of our communities. Together, we can tackle challenges, celebrate successes, and drive meaningful change.
