A pop of happiness in every bottle 💫 Picture this: a scorching summer day, a chilled bottle shimmering with droplets, and that delightful fizz as you crack open a can. With the first sip, you're greeted by a burst of taste - a blend of sweet and tangy touch that dances on your tongue. This is Coca-Cola, a sip that whisks you away to a world of refreshment in a flash 😁 But did you know that The Coca-Cola Company was actually discovered by a #pharmacist!! The brand name has an interesting origin and history. #Pemberton developed a syrup made from coca leaves and kola nuts, which he initially called "Pemberton's French Wine Coca" because of its wine-like flavor. In 1886, Pemberton's bookkeeper, Frank Robinson, suggested the name "Coca-Cola," combining two key ingredients: #coca leaves and kola nuts. And "cola" referred to the flavor. Robinson also penned the iconic script logo that is still used today. After this, there was no turning back for this drink. Coca-Cola’s popularity grew rapidly, and it was soon sold in bottles and distributed across the globe. In 1892, Coca-Cola was incorporated as a company, and its iconic contour bottle was patented in 1915. Over the years, the formula for Coca-Cola evolved. WHY ISN’T BOTTLE WEIGHT A CUE FOR QUALITY IN LIQUOR? Like, shouldn’t nicer spirits be sold in thick-walled, faceted, hefty bottles? Camper English (The Alcademic) has been recording the price & weight of liquor bottles for almost 15 years. He’s got nearly 800 bottles in his database. Prices ranged from Sobieski vodka at $14.99 to Hennessey XO at $300. Weights ranged from Jim Beam rye at 391g to Camus Cognac XO at a beefy 1,355g. Turns out there’s less than a 20% correlation between price & weight. (The Rsq of the linear regression is a measly 0.039. 😂) F’rinstance, Balblair’s 1991 Highland single malt Scotch ($249.99+) and Skyy vodka ($19 or less) both weigh about 528g. And D’usse XO Cognac ($199) and Double Cross vodka ($29) both weigh in at about 1,265g. I know there are many factors that go into bottle design in spirits. But as a marketer and brand scientist (and the proprietor of a speakeasy), it baffles me that bottle weight isn’t used more often as a symbol of quality for the liquid inside. Granted, the very fanciest spirits like the $1,000+ stuff in airport duty-free shops often come in (or with) hefty crystal decanters. But even among the $70+ set that Camper weighed, there's only a 9.3% correlation between price & weight. 🍊 🍊 🍊 Shoppers use explicit, tangible cues to assess the quality of stuff all the time. And brands often figure this out and then use those cues to express quality. Of course, price itself is one of the ultimate cues: Balbair 1991 must oooobbbviously be good: it’s $250 a bottle. But bottle weight seems like a good physical, tangible, visceral, (and often subconscious) symbol of quality that spirit-makers should use more. 🍊 🍊 🍊 Don't miss a post! What are the best things to do on a hot, sweaty summer's day in Hong Kong? For me, they are: 1. Water sports 2. Going to museums and exhibitions 3. Having a glass of sparkling wine while reading or watching a film at home. I used to think that sparkling wine lovers were mostly female, but Arianna Pizzolato told me that in Italy both men and women drink Prosecco. It's not unusual for them to drink #Prosecco every day, especially in the summer. Prosecco is remarkably affordable. Generally, an entry-level bottle of Prosecco costs just over €10 in Italy; in Hong Kong, the price can be as low as HKD 50 (USD 7) during promotions according to my observation. Arianna says that as long as the bottle is sealed with a DOC label (see comment), the production meets the requirements of the regulatory body and the quality is reassuring.
